The Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked like they had the NFC South locked up. Now, after losing four of their last five games, including a stunner against the Saints, panic seems to be setting in.
With the Carolina Panthers suddenly tied for the division lead, Tampa Bay’s front office made a move that has everyone talking. Is bringing back a franchise legend a stroke of genius, or just a sign that the team has run out of ideas?
Is the Signing of Jason Pierre-Paul a Sign of Desperation?
It wasn’t long ago that the Buccaneers appeared to be running away with the NFC South title. That comfort is gone. Their recent skid puts their playoff hopes in jeopardy, as they now sit tied with the Carolina Panthers at the top of the division following a shocking Week 14 loss to the last-place Saints. This collapse may have convinced them to seek outside help, so they signed Jason Pierre-Paul to their practice squad the day after that fourth loss in five games.
While he is a former two-time Super Bowl champion, the reality is stark. Pierre-Paul turns 37 years old in a couple of weeks and hasn’t played in a game since the 2023 season. Pierre-Paul spent four years with the Buccaneers previously and helped them win a Super Bowl ring, but his time away from the NFL raises valid concerns. His advanced age and hiatus are main reasons why many have criticized the team for making what looks like a desperate move.
Many around the NFL are calling out this apparent desperation as the team attempts to salvage the season. The criticism has been mostly pointed at the Buccaneers’ front office, specifically general manager Jason Licht.
“The sign of desperation. Licht hasn’t been able to add any pass rush to this team since the SB team,” said one.
Another observer noted the timing issues regarding the trade deadline. “Love JPP, but this seems like a very desperate move three weeks after the deadline when some pretty good pass rushers were available. But Jason Licht was holding on to those draft picks,” stated another.
“This reeks of desperation, the Bucs cannot be serious,” replied another.
The frustration continued to mount on social media. “This really does feel like a desperate, grasping at straws type of move that, if you really wanted to do, should’ve been done earlier in the year. Again, this team is doomsday reactive instead of proactive,” shared another.
“This just tells you how flummoxed the front office is with no clear answers other than to try a desperate Hail Mary move like this,” posted another.
The team clearly feels they need a spark. Their defense has been an issue, currently ranking just 18th this season in PFSN’s Impact Rankings. Improving on this side of the ball would likely be beneficial to their chances of turning things back around. It remains to be seen if Pierre-Paul has enough left in the tank to make a difference, but they are giving it a shot.
