Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin endures his share of struggles. Despite a career that includes a Super Bowl ring, accolades, and millions of dollars, misfortune finds him. Granted, as humans, everyone seeks to strive for more and overcome the odds, regardless of what they are and what is thrown at them. However, when setbacks occur, people cannot help but stop, pause, and try to catch their metaphorical breath.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin Discusses Personal Grief
Godwin last touched the field 342 days ago, when he dislocated his left ankle against the Baltimore Ravens. A season-ending injury would generally be enough to launch a player into a rough mental space. Yet, in retrospect, that could be the least worrisome issue that the Pro Bowl wide receiver will contend with. Before his injury, his father, Rod, passed away. The receiver took the story to The Players’ Tribune to articulate it.
“But if I’m being honest? When the cart pulled through the tunnel, I knew how long the road was ahead of me. Man, I just missed my dad. I always knew where my dad was at my games when I was little because I could hear him. I started playing football when I was six, and I was pretty good.”
Godwin reflected upon the football memories that bonded him with his father.
“Can’t lie. I was a bit of a baller as a kid. They’d hand it off to me on some end-around or something, I’d break a tackle and just hit the sideline, and I’d be gone, gone. And as I was running, I’d hear my dad. He’d almost be beside me. Just sprinting down the sidelines yelling, ‘THERE HE GOES! MY BOY! HALF MAN, HALF MONSTER! THE MANSTER!’ Oh, yeah, Dad is in the building.”
The elder Godwin succumbed to an aggressive form of cancer a little less than nine months before his son’s catastrophic injury. Under those circumstances, the Tampa Bay pass catcher explained how, amid an injury that saw his foot twist in a manner that it should not, he just wanted to see his father.
Yet, today marks a new day. Godwin is expected to take the field after sitting out and healing up for almost a year. According to Yahoo Sports, the 29-year-old is likely to suit up against the Philadelphia Eagles. Godwin returns to an offense that fared well but will need him if they want to make a serious run. The Buccaneers rank 13th in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric.
