Bryce Young Injury Update: What’s the Latest on the Panthers QB, and Will He Play in Week 9?

As the Carolina Panthers will go up against the Green Bay Packers on the road in Week 9 on Sunday, Bryce Young’s status is a question

The Carolina Panthers’ offense has been noticeably different without quarterback Bryce Young. That was evident in Week 8, when the team suffered a 40-9 loss to the Buffalo Bills with veteran Andy Dalton starting in Young’s place. As the Panthers will go up against the Green Bay Packers on the road in Week 9 on Sunday, Young’s status remains a question.

Bryce Young Injury Update

Bryce Young sustained a high-ankle sprain during the Carolina Panthers’ Week 7 win over the New York Jets, exiting in the third quarter after being sacked. The injury forced him to miss last Sunday’s game in Buffalo, where Andy Dalton started in his absence. The veteran quarterback completed 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards with one interception, while the Panthers’ offense managed just one touchdown and turned the ball over three times.

Coach Dave Canales provided an update on Monday, indicating that Young is progressing and could return to practice midweek. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on X:

“#Panthers coach Dave Canales says QB Bryce Young (ankle) had a good running session today and he’s optimistic Young will practice Wednesday, but he’s still day-to-day. They visit Green Bay on Sunday.”

Before the injury, Young completed 61.6% of his passes for 1,288 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, along with 69 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown through seven games. His pocket mobility and quick decision-making have helped limit Carolina to only 12 sacks allowed this year. His PSFN’s Impact Score is 64.3, with a D rating. He ranks 30th among all quarterbacks.

Even if Young is cleared for limited practice, the Panthers may take a conservative approach to his return. High-ankle sprains typically require multiple weeks of recovery, and Carolina’s offensive line remains depleted. Taylor Moton and Cade Mays are questionable for Sunday, while Brady Christensen is expected to join Robert Hunt on the season-ending injured reserve. The unit will rely heavily on depth players.

The situation could be problematic against Green Bay’s pass rush, led by Micah Parsons and a defensive front that has caused problems for opposing quarterbacks throughout the season. Given the circumstances, the Panthers may choose to rest Young for another week to ensure full recovery rather than risk a setback behind an injury-riddled line.

The team’s first injury report on Wednesday should offer more clarity on Young’s availability for Week 9.
