Entering the 2026 NFL season, the Cleveland Browns face a crucial quarterback decision. Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel headline a largely underwhelming group, and with the NFL Draft nearing, the Browns general manager hinted at adding another signal-caller.
Why the Cleveland Browns Could Target a Franchise Quarterback This Offseason
On Sunday afternoon, Browns general manager Andrew Berry spoke with local media about the organization’s remaining offseason plans, offering notable comments on the quarterback position.
Reportedly, according to Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot, “#Browns GM Andrew Berry reiterates that the team could add another young QB. He said #Alabama QB Ty Simpson has a “bright future” in the league but wouldn’t say how interested.”
Following Berry’s remarks, ESPN reporter Daniel Oyefusi shared further details on the team’s quarterback situation.
When Berry was first asked about the quarterback competition, he said, “Nobody has touched the grass, nobody has really worked with our coaching staff. I wouldn’t handicap it for anyone. I think everyone in that room deserves an opportunity.”

When asked about the possibility of adding a fourth quarterback to the group, the general manager replied, “Our lean would be if we do add someone to the quarterback room, it would be someone who’s a younger player most likely.”
Finally, Berry mentioned it was “wholly realistic” to add another young signal-caller to compete for the starting role.
When looking at the Browns’ current quarterback room, it’s completely understandable that Berry and the rest of Cleveland’s staff would like to keep their options open. This past season, Sanders posted a 56.9 Quarterback Impact score, ranking 46th among all passers. Gabriel recorded a 51.0 score, placing 47th, according to PFSN NFL QB Impact metrics.
Watson, meanwhile, is an entirely other story. The 30-year-old quarterback missed the entire 2025 season with a torn Achilles after suffering the injury midway through the prior season. In his most recent season of action, in 2024, he posted a 51.1 score, finishing 39th among quarterbacks.

Given their current quarterback situation, considering a prospect like Simpson or another rookie appears likely. According to the PFSN NFL Draft HQ, Simpson holds an 84.22 grade, ranking second among all quarterback prospects and 43rd overall. Other potential options include Cade Klubnik, Garrett Nussmeier, and Drew Allar.
Between the current quarterback room of Sanders, Watson, and Gabriel, and three draft picks within the top 40 selections, the situation will certainly be worth monitoring as the offseason rolls on and the Browns soon decide on the next quarterback of the future.
