NFL Draft Rumors: Browns Gearing Towards Selecting 14-TD Playmaker With No. 6 Overall Pick

The Cleveland Browns gearing toward selecting a playmaker with the No. 6 overall pick could give Deshaun Watson an alpha target.

The Cleveland Browns are staring down the board at No. 6 overall, and the consensus in Berea is shifting toward adding premium perimeter help. While their quarterback situation remains murky, whoever is under center will need a reliable target who can dictate coverage, and an in-state prospect has surged to the top of their draft board.

Why Carnell Tate Fits the Browns’ Prototype

General manager Andrew Berry has a history of prioritizing premium positions in the first round. Cleveland has spent the last few offseasons trying to assemble a wide receiver room that can consistently stretch the field and create after the catch.

Ohio State’s Carnell Tate checks every box for a modern X-receiver. He brings size, exceptional route-running fluidity, and a proven track record against elite Big Ten cornerbacks.

Tate broke out as a 9-touchdown playmaker for the Buckeyes, showcasing an ability to win contested catches and separate at the top of his routes. PFSN’s CFB QB Impact metric ranks Tate 8th in college football for 2025, with a grade of B.

The Browns have closely monitored his progression just down I-71 in Columbus. His production profile aligns perfectly with the analytical models Cleveland’s front office relies on during draft evaluations.

Drafting a receiver in the top 10 requires conviction. The Browns currently lack a true alpha in their receiver pipeline who can take the pressure off the rest of the offense. Tate’s catch radius and body control make him a highly attractive security blanket for a quarterback room that desperately needs consistency.

The Athletic’s Zac Jackson recently highlighted the growing buzz connecting the in-state receiver to Cleveland’s war room.

“If the Browns can’t find a trade-down partner, I think they’ll take Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate at No. 6,” Jackson reported.

Trading Down From the No. 6 Pick Remains a Factor

Cleveland holds the sixth pick, putting them in a prime position to capitalize on quarterback desperation from teams drafting behind them. Several franchises need long-term answers under center and might be willing to pay a premium to jump into the top 10. If a team like the New Orleans Saints decides to move up, Berry could accumulate extra Day 2 capital and still land a high-impact receiver later in the first round.

But passing on Tate comes with significant risk. The receiver class drops off after the elite tier, and Cleveland cannot afford to ignore the glaring need out wide.

Keeping the pick ensures they secure a player with Pro Bowl upside. A trade-down only makes sense if the Browns believe they can extract massive value while still addressing the boundary.

The Browns are keeping their options open, but the internal focus is narrowing. Cleveland needs an offensive spark plug capable of turning quick slants into explosive gains.

Tate has done exactly that in the most hostile environments in college football. He is ready to step into a high-volume role on Day 1. If the phone does not ring with a massive offer, the Browns are ready to keep the Buckeye star in Ohio.
