The Denver Broncos lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, a contest affected by a second-half snowstorm. A controversial first-quarter decision by Sean Payton later drew the ire of fans and significantly influenced the final score.
Sean Payton Explains Decision That Cost Broncos in Loss to Patriots
In the post-game press conference, Payton said the Broncos controlled the game mentally and saw an opportunity to build a 14-point lead.
The coach also noted that the Broncos’ defense was performing well and expressed confidence that the Patriots’ offense would not be able to respond in the first half. However, a disastrous fumble by Jarrett Stidham then gave New England the chance to head into halftime tied.

“I just felt like we had momentum. To get up 14, it felt like we had a good call. I was just watching how our defense was playing. The turnover on our end resulting in a touchdown, I’ll look at and critique and pay close attention to. It was a hard-fought game, and we didn’t do enough to win it,” Payton said.
“It’s also a call you make based on the team you’re playing and what you’re watching on the other side of the ball. There will always be second thoughts. … Hindsight, the initial sub run thought was a better decision.”

Payton’s Decision Was Decisive in the Broncos’ Defeat
With Stidham leading the offense, Denver established a 7-0 lead. The quarterback completed a 52-yard pass to Marvin Mims, putting the team on the opponent’s 6-yard line, then followed it up with a touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton.
Denver’s defense, which ranks No. 1 in the PFSN Defensive Impact Metric with an A- grade, forced several punts. Early in the second quarter, the Broncos advanced into Patriots territory. At the 14-yard line, they faced fourth-and-one.
Instead of securing three points with a field goal, Payton opted for ground play, allowing the Patriots’ defense to stop the advance and costing Denver the chance to extend its lead to two possessions.
The decision became even more costly as the snow intensified, making offense increasingly difficult. With Denver unable to score, New England capitalized and took a 10-7 lead early in the second half.
As the field became fully snow-covered in the final period, offensive progress was nearly impossible for both teams, making the missed opportunity the deciding factor. Denver had one last chance to tie the game with a field goal, but the deflected kick sailed wide, sealing the Broncos’ defeat in the AFC Championship Game.
