Bo Nix has been unavailable for the Denver Broncos’ OTAs so far after undergoing a pair of surgeries to address a fractured ankle suffered in January. Nix was one of the league’s most effective quarterbacks as the Broncos won their first playoff game since 2015 and tied a franchise record for wins in a single season (14-3).
Sean Payton Gives Positive Bo Nix Injury Return Update
During a conversation with Trey Wingo, Broncos head coach Sean Payton provided a precise timeline for Nix’s gradual return to action in time for Denver’s three-day, mandatory minicamp from Jun. 16-18.
“So, he had the surgery. He had a cleanup that was done. I would say probably now, almost a month ago. He’s out here at these practices,” Payton said. “I think we’re in week one, next week, week two. I think week three, which essentially is minicamp. And it’s very similar. You get a little bit more time in your meetings.”
“I think he’ll be a participant in a limited fashion,” Payton added. “So he’s doing great. He’ll be fully healthy before June ends. And then I’m sure he’ll be here rehabbing in July, and when we get going by the end of July. There won’t be any hiccups when training camp begins. And I’m optimistic that we’ll get a chance to see him in that third week.”
In Nix’s absence, backup quarterbacks Sam Ehlinger and Jarrett Stidham have taken the Broncos’ snaps during the team’s OTAs practices.
The former Oregon Ducks quarterback earned a PFSN QB Impact score of 78.4 last year, good for No. 14 in the league after tallying 3,931 passing yards on 63.4% completion, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while adding 356 rushing yards and 5 scores for the Broncos in the regular season.
The Broncos added to Nix’s offensive arsenal by acquiring former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. While speaking to reporters on Thursday, Waddle praised Nix’s enthusiasm for the game despite his absence from training.

“Bo is definitely a competitor,” Waddle said. “He loves talking ball. He loves just being around, being around the guys. I think he’s going to be a great leader. I can just see the traits from him, just day-to-day. If he sees something, he’s going to tell me about it. Then, we kind of pick each other’s brains and try to get on the same page as best we can.”
Next season, Nix will work with new quarterback coach Logan Kilgore as the Broncos attempt to get over the hump and win the Super Bowl for the first time in 10 years.
