The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a shocking win from last Thursday Night against the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers were down many key starters in that game, and Mac Jones took over as the starting quarterback for Brock Purdy. Jones went on to have his best games of the career, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns. He battled through a cramping forearm and a sprained left knee to complete 33-of-49 passes.
The emergence of Jones allows the 49ers to take their time bringing Purdy back from injury. In fact, it looks like Jones will be under center for the 49ers again in Week 6 as Purdy has not practiced all week.
Brock Purdy Will Miss Week 6 Game
Purdy’s toe injury, which he suffered earlier in the season, is expected to keep him out another week. He was able to return in Week 4 but reaggravated the injury, which is why he is missing another game. While Purdy was not able to practice this week, he was seen pushing a weighted sled.
The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reported these happenings. He wrote on X, “Unlike yesterday, Mac Jones was back to throwing at today’s practice. Jauan Jennings also was on hand for second straight day. No Brock Purdy or Ricky Pearsall. Purdy seen pushing a weight sled, suggesting his big toe is making progress.”

In previous seasons, if Purdy were to miss time, the 49ers would find themselves in significant trouble. However, the addition of Jones this offseason has allowed the offense to continue along smoothly and have the 49ers atop the NFC with a 4-1 record.
The 49ers will have a tough test in Week 6 as they head to Tampa Bay to face the 4-1 Buccaneers. Baker Mayfield and company have one of the best offenses in football, which means Jones will likely find himself in a shootout.
Some people have been clamoring for the 49ers to keep Jones as their starter even when Purdy is healthy. If he can continue his success and find a way to beat the Buccaneers, that noise will only get louder.
According to PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi), both teams have the same grade, C+, and almost identical offense impact scores. The 49ers are slightly better with 78.6, and the Buccs have a 78.3 score.
Injuries Continue to Haunt 49ers
Finding a team that suffers worse injuries than the 49ers is hard. Each season, they seem ravaged, and that has been no different this year. George Kittle has been on the IR since Week 2 but is expected to return soon. Also, the 49ers have been down wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings for multiple games.
Not to mention their best pass rusher, Nick Bosa, is done for the season with a torn ACL. Most teams can only withstand so many injuries before they begin to fall apart. However, the 49ers have done a great job winning games while some of their best players recover.
Although all the injuries may make it difficult for the 49ers to be actual Super Bowl contenders, they have a strong coaching staff and seem to be getting the best out of their depth, which will keep them in contention for a while.
