The San Francisco 49ers have been decimated by injuries in the early part of the 2025 season. With critical offensive players missing time and many coming in and out of the lineup, their franchise QB, Brock Purdy, has been no exception.
He’s been struggling with injuries and missed Week 5 after returning in Week 4. Their backup, Mac Jones, is also nursing an injury. Find out the latest on Purdy and Jones with their status for Week 6’s matchup in Tampa against the Buccaneers.
Injury Update on Brock Purdy and Mac Jones
Purdy, Ricky Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings were among the players who missed practice on Wednesday for San Francisco. Jones did practice, but it was limited.
The 49ers’ starting quarterback also missed Thursday’s practice and on Friday, was officially listed out for Week 6. Jones is currently listed as questionable, but he is expected to start against the Buccaneers.
Purdy is reportedly still struggling with a toe injury, while Jones is dealing with a PCL injury, but the latter is expected to play. In the starter’s absence, Jones has been gutting through pain and played against the Rams last week.
The 49ers have demonstrated plenty of resilience, now sitting at 4-1 — entering Week 6, they have sole possession of first place in the NFC West. They are coming off a huge upset win on Thursday Night Football against the Rams and have had extra days to rest. This could be pivotal in getting their injured players back and in the lineup for Sunday.
The Buccaneers are no slouch for an opponent. All four of their wins have come on game-winning drives, so they know how to win and will be a tough match for the injury-ridden 49ers. Jones has been great for San Francisco, though, and should give them a chance to win, assuming he doesn’t face a setback.

Even with all their injury problems, the 49ers’ offense is ranked 11th in PFSN’s Offense Impact score with a grade of 78.7. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has always been a great offensive mind, and he’s been working his magic early on in the 2025 season.
It helps that their star RB Christian McCaffrey has stayed healthy. He’s been a dominant threat catching passes and running the ball, which has helped ease the blow of their injury losses. In fact, going into Week 6, McCaffrey actually leads the team with 387 receiving yards — and in rushing with 282 yards.
As Sunday approaches, fans will learn more about the status of San Francisco’s injuries. The 49ers will slowly get their players back, and when it happens, it could be very scary for the rest of the NFL. While he isn’t likely to return for the Bucs game, TE George Kittle is getting close.
Regardless, the 49ers and Buccaneers will kick off from Tampa at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 12. The game will be televised on certain CBS stations.
