Brian Flores has been serving as the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings for each of the past three NFL seasons. Their relationship will continue beyond this year after the franchise rewarded him with a massive new contract. Here are the details of what turned into a record-breaking deal for the coveted coach.
What’s Brian Flores’ Record-Breaking Contract to Remain Vikings DC in 2026?
Flores entered the 2026 NFL offseason as a free agent after his previous contract as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator expired. He was considered by many around the league to be a potential head coach candidate for several of the vacancies, but he ultimately failed to land one of the openings.
This has led him to return to Minnesota on a new contract, and it’s one that sets a new record for his position. His deal is reportedly worth around $6 million per season, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in NFL history by AAV. He has apparently surpassed Vic Fangio, who is making around $4.5 million in the same role with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Flores is widely considered to be one of the best defensive coaches in the entire NFL, and his proven success with the Vikings is among the reasons why. Their defense has finished third and fourth in the past two seasons in PFSN’s Impact Rankings and essentially carried the team to a respectable 9-8 record this year. Their offense severely struggled all season long, but his defense stepped up to keep them competitive most weeks.

For comparison, they finished 28th of 32 offenses in the rankings, mainly due to J.J. McCarthy being a massive disappointment so far. This is where Flores has thrived defensively, a performance that has helped the Vikings overcome their offensive struggles and finish the year with a winning record.
This likely contributed to his being considered a legitimate candidate to fill one of the head coach vacancies in 2026, as well as to his previous experience as a head coach. He served this role for the Miami Dolphins for three years and turned in winning seasons in two of them.
It’s surely possible that he will continue emerging as a head coach candidate in future seasons, especially if he keeps posting elite defensive numbers in Minnesota. For now, he will remain with the Vikings, and both sides are likely satisfied now that he’s the highest-paid defensive coordinator of all time.
