Brandon Aiyuk has yet to make his debut for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2025 NFL season. He suffered a season-ending knee injury last season that required surgery on multiple ligaments, which he is still recovering from.
The veteran wide receiver still hasn’t even been on the practice field, so he has several hurdles to clear before officially making his return. General manager John Lynch recently provided an update on the situation and addressed his potential timeline.
What’s the Injury Status of 49ers Star Brandon Aiyuk?
The 49ers have been plagued by injuries this season, especially to their wide receivers. This includes Aiyuk, who has been working his way back from major knee surgery last year. It has been unclear when he will be ready to make his return, but general manager Lynch recently provided an update.
According to KNBR, the GM said, “Oh yeah there’s hope he plays. More importantly than hope there’s some evidence. He’s making really good progress, he’s been putting in time and it’s coming nearer as to when he’s gonna be out there on the field.”
John Lynch says there’s evidence on Brandon Aiyuk’s progress:

Some have speculated that Aiyuk could potentially miss the entire 2025 season, but Lynch seems fairly confident that he will be able to make his return at some point this year. He praised his progress so far and even claimed that he sees evidence that he could be getting closer.
He would be a huge addition to the 49ers’ wide receivers after they parted ways with Deebo Samuel during the offseason and are dealing with several injuries to their pass catchers. Wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall have both missed time this season, as well as tight end George Kittle, so they have been playing short-handed.
Complicating this situation even further is an injury to starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who has played in just two games this year. Mac Jones has been filling in for him, and despite their long list of key injuries, the 49ers have impressively still turned in a 5-2 record. They have an offense impact score of 77.6 and are graded C+ according to PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi).
Aiyuk will surely be unavailable for Week 8 as the 49ers have yet to open his practice window, but an eventual return this season is a realistic possibility, according to Lynch. He is currently on the PUP list, but when they do open his practice window, he will have three weeks from that point to activate him. Aiyuk could potentially be a major late-season addition as they compete for a playoff spot.
