The San Francisco 49ers are having a surprisingly good season for a team that the injury bug has bitten. They have been without several of their top players for much of the year, and one of their former Pro Bowlers has yet to take the field: wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is still recovering from a torn ACL.
Aiyuk was expected to return at some point, but the situation appears uncertain. Reports on his health have been scarce, and his recovery is taking longer than the typical ACL timeline. Nonetheless, it seems the 49ers’ front office is hopeful Aiyuk can play this season, though they are not counting on it.
Brandon Aiyuk Unlikely to Play this Season
Aiyuk suffered an ACL tear on Oct. 20, 2024, in Week 7 of last season. He has been out for 14 months since the injury and has still not returned to play. Yet there have been no reports of a setback for Aiyuk during his recovery.
According to NFL.com, 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan were noncommittal on Aiyuk playing this season. Lynch said, “Realistic? I’m not sure. Hopeful? Yeah. So, I think that’s kind of where I’d leave that.” Shanahan said, “Oh, I’m definitely still hopeful. I’m not counting on it, but I’m definitely still hoping that can happen.”
Neither Lynch nor Shanahan seems overly optimistic about Aiyuk playing this season. That means they will continue to rely on their current receiving corps, which has struggled to stay healthy this year. Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall have been in and out of the lineup, battling numerous injuries. Believe it or not, the leading receiver in San Francisco is running back Christian McCaffrey.
Even without receiving weapons, the offense is operating at a high level thanks to Shanahan and company. According to PFSN, the 49ers have an Offense Impact Score of 81.3, which is 10th in the NFL.
49ers Continue to Operate as Next Man-Up
Shanahan should be considered for coach of the year for what he has done with the 49ers’ injury-depleted roster. They lost Fred Warner and Nick Bosa for the season, along with George Kittle and Brock Purdy, and missed extended periods of time. However, they never made excuses; it was always next man up, and the 49ers have continued to win, pushing their record to 9-4 at this point in the season.
The 49ers have played themselves into the playoff picture and seemingly have a strong chance to win a wild-card spot. However, their schedule toughens over the last three weeks of the season, when they face the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks. It will be interesting to see if they can reach the playoffs despite all the injuries they have endured this season.
