49ers Still Expect To Trade Brandon Aiyuk Amid Rumored ‘Pettiness’ Between Both Sides

Brandon Aiyuk's trade future remains uncertain as 49ers leverage voided guarantees amid reported 'pettiness' with the star WR.

The uneasy standoff between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had drifted into that strange offseason territory where rumors, strategy, and a little bit of pride all seem to be sharing the same room. What once looked like a straightforward star-player partnership has instead become one of the league’s “what happened here?” situations.

Why the 49ers Are Taking Their Time With Brandon Aiyuk

After the team voided Aiyuk’s guaranteed money for 2026, triggered by missed contractual requirements tied to his recovery and participation, the power dynamic shifted dramatically. Suddenly, the 49ers weren’t operating from a position of urgency. They were holding the cards. And with that leverage, the organization now appears willing to wait out the situation rather than rush toward a clean break.

Still, the tone around the saga hasn’t exactly been warm and fuzzy.

NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco recently said about Aiyuk: “They clearly think they can trade him for something … I don’t know if there is a bit of pettiness going on here … The pettiness is very obvious to look at but I don’t think they would ruin the franchise’s reputation.”

If the 49ers are frustrated, they’re also patient. And patience, in this case, might be their greatest advantage. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the organization has little incentive to rush a decision. With most of Aiyuk’s guaranteed money already wiped from the books, the team can afford to let the offseason play out and see if another franchise eventually decides he’s worth the gamble.

Schefter explained that while reports have suggested Aiyuk could be released, the reality is likely slower and more deliberate. The 49ers could keep him on the roster through the NFL draft, wait to see if a team becomes desperate for wide receiver help, or even hold onto him into early summer.

In other words, the clock isn’t ticking loudly in San Francisco’s offices. If anything, it’s working in their favor.

How Aiyuk’s 49ers Tenure Unraveled

What makes the current stalemate particularly striking is how different the narrative looked not long ago.

Aiyuk once seemed destined to become the centerpiece of the 49ers’ passing game. His blend of route-running precision and explosive playmaking had fans imagining a future that echoed the dominance of franchise legend Terrell Owens. He had a PFSN WR Impact score of 92.7 in 2023.

That belief is exactly why San Francisco handed him a four-year, $120 million contract extension. At the time, it felt like a natural commitment.

Then came the knee injury in 2024: torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus damage that changed everything. Recovery was expected to be long and difficult, but what followed reportedly strained the relationship further. Aiyuk’s absence from team activities throughout the following year became a point of tension, eventually leading to the contract complications that gave the team its current leverage.
