The Buffalo Bills secured a big win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 13, keeping themselves firmly in contention for the AFC East title against the New England Patriots, or at least a wild-card spot.
With a push in the final stretch of the regular season in mind, the Bills seized the opportunity provided by the Steelers and added a veteran with proven experience in pass coverage and run support, aiming to address weaknesses in their defensive lineup.
Buffalo Bills Claim Darius Slay One Day After Steelers Departure
According to Tom Pelissero, the Bills claimed Darius Slay one day after the veteran cornerback left the Steelers. Slay did not play in Week 13, as Asante Samuel Jr. replaced him on the active roster.
Slay signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in March after five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. His stint in Pittsburgh lasted less than a year, falling short of fans’ expectations.
The Bills claimed veteran CB Darius Slay off waivers from the Steelers, per source.

In 10 games for the Steelers this season, Slay recorded 36 tackles, one fumble recovery, three deflected passes, and one tackle for loss. The numbers didn’t excite Pittsburgh, but they were enough to catch Buffalo’s attention.
Slay, a six-time Pro Bowler, is set to debut for the Bills this Sunday in Week 14 against the Bengals, which currently rank 22nd in the PFSN Offense Impact metric with a C- grade. He has already faced the team twice this season with Pittsburgh. He will compete with Tre’Davious White and rookie Maxwell Hairston for a starting job.
Bills Continue to Call Veterans to Strengthen Roster
This move highlights the Bills’ strategy of adding veterans for key playoff games. They recently acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks to strengthen their passing playbook.
Mecole Hardman Jr. was another recent addition but was moved to injured reserve after a Week 11 calf injury against Tampa Bay. He is expected to return in the coming weeks.
The roster features veterans like Gabe Davis, who has contributed more to the offense recently and is expected to help in the playoffs alongside other experienced additions.
After facing the Bengals in Week 14, the Bills will play a tough away game against the Patriots on Dec. 14, which could determine their main mission for the rest of the regular season. Their schedule also includes games against the Cleveland Browns (Dec. 21), Philadelphia Eagles (Dec. 28), and New York Jets (Jan. 4) in the fierce battle for a playoff spot.
