Bills Announce Surprise Replacement for Sean McDermott by Hiring Coach ‘Very Close to Josh Allen’

The Buffalo Bills have hired their new head coach to replace Sean McDermott, and it is someone who has a great relationship with Josh Allen.

When the Buffalo Bills’ season ended in the playoffs following their crushing loss to the Denver Broncos, changes were needed. Many believed this would come from the front office, but instead, they fired head coach Sean McDermott.

The Bills immediately became the top job in the market, and today, they have made a decision on their next franchise HC.

Former Bills OC Joe Brady Has Been Named the Next HC

Since firing McDermott, it has felt like the Bills would hire their next HC from a group of candidates with ties to either quarterback Josh Allen or the organization. In the end, this is exactly what happened.

Former Bills OC Joe Brady has been promoted to the Franchise’s HC. “The Bills set to have a new head coach that’s from right inside the building and is very close to Josh Allen,” wrote Bills reporter Aliana Getzenberg on X.

With Brady being the former OC and having had a great relationship with Allen, this move makes sense for the Bills. Back in 2022, the Bills hired Brady as the next QBs coach after his unsuccessful stint as the Carolina Panthers’ OC. To that point, per PFSN’s QB Impact Metric, this was Allen’s best season of his career, finishing 2nd among all other QBs.

In the 2023 season, Brady was promoted to the team’s interim OC after Ken Dorsey was fired. When this move was made, Buffalo was 5-5, but after Brady took over, the team finished 11-6.

His impact was felt throughout the organization, and in 2024, Brady was hired as the full-time OC. In his first season officially as OC, the Bills had a dynamic offense, and Allen finished the season winning the NFL MVP. He was also ranked as the #1 QB in PFSN’s QB Impact Metric.

This past season, this success on offense was similar to previous years, and with this type of consistency, he was a prime name in HC conversations this offseason. Once the Bills fired McDermott, Brady became a top candidate to take over, and that’s what happened.

Now, it’s time for the new head coach to build this staff and hopefully get the Bills to the Super Bowl.
