Bengals Projected To Draft ‘Rangy, Ball-Hawking’ Star To Lead DC Al Golden’s Defense

The Cincinnati Bengals are projected to draft safety Dillon Thieneman to provide a ball-hawking presence for Al Golden's defense.

The Cincinnati Bengals could be in line to make one of the more important defensive picks of the 2026 NFL Draft. After another season in which the defense failed to provide enough consistency, the Bengals appear positioned to use the No. 10 overall selection to help defensive coordinator Al Golden.

One prospect now gaining traction in that range is Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman, whose blend of athleticism, range, and versatility has made him one of the most discussed defensive backs in the class. While Ohio State’s Caleb Downs is often viewed as the top safety available, some evaluators believe Thieneman is close enough as a prospect to justify going in the same tier. If the Bengals go in that direction, they may be adding the kind of movable defensive centerpiece their secondary has lacked.

Why Dillon Thieneman Is Emerging as a Serious Round 1 Target for the Bengals

In his latest mock draft, PFSN analyst Ian Cummings projected Thieneman to Cincinnati and acknowledged immediately that the selection could raise eyebrows because of the ongoing comparison to Downs. Still, he made clear that the gap between the two safeties is not as wide as some might assume.

“Dillon Thieneman over Caleb Downs is sure to be the talk of this 2026 NFL Mock Draft. I have Downs rated slightly above Thieneman, but Thieneman is a top-ten prospect on my board, and if Downs’ knee is flagged medically, it could make a difference,” Cummings wrote.

That context is important because Cincinnati is drafting in a range where multiple premium defenders could still be available, and medical evaluations often play a major role in sorting final boards. Cummings also explained why Thieneman’s overall profile fits so cleanly into an NFL secondary.

“There’s a case to make that Thieneman’s film is almost as good as Downs’, and the testing is certifiably elite. Alongside safety Bryan Cook, Thieneman can exist in his element as a rangy, ball-hawking single-high safety, but he’s just as dangerous in two-high and in the box,” Cummings added.

That versatility is indeed a major part of Thieneman’s appeal. After beginning his college career at Purdue and later transferring to Oregon, he established himself as a player capable of impacting the game from multiple alignments.

He has drawn comparisons to Baltimore Ravens standout Kyle Hamilton because of the way he can shift between deep coverage, slot responsibilities, and box usage depending on the call.

How Dillon Thieneman Fits the Bengals’ Defensive Needs

The Bengals’ need for a player like Thieneman is not difficult to see. According to PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric, Cincinnati finished 6-11 and posted a 65.3 DEFi, which ranked 28th in the league. Their defense received a D grade, reflecting a unit that consistently struggled to hold up over the course of the season.

Overall, the numbers point to a defense that needs more range, more playmaking, and more structural reliability on the back end.

Thieneman’s testing at the NFL combine only strengthened his case for his massive draft stock, as he ran a 4.35-second 40-yard dash, posted a 41-inch vertical, and registered a 10-foot-5 broad jump, numbers that reinforced the athletic traits already visible on tape.

He also remained durable across the 2024 and 2025 seasons and finished his final college year with 92 tackles and two interceptions. On the PFSN Consensus Big Board, Dillon Thieneman carries a grade of 90.51, ranks No. 13 overall, and is viewed as a potential first-round selection.

If Cincinnati is serious about giving Al Golden a more flexible and explosive defense, Thieneman feels like the kind of prospect who could help that transformation happen quickly. And if the board breaks the right way, he may be one of the Bengals’ clearest first-round answers.
