Shedeur Sanders was in the spotlight after a historic slide in the 2025 NFL Draft. The consensus top-three pick was selected on Day 3 of this year’s draft. Less than two months later, the Colorado Buffaloes product grabbed headlines for a speeding violation.
Sanders is receiving considerable criticism for his actions. Here’s what former Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson had to say about the matter.
Chad Johnson Lauds Shedeur Sanders’ Decision After the Browns QB’s Speeding Violations
Sanders was pulled over for speeding on I-71, driving his black Dodge Ram TRX near the Ohio Turnpike bridge on June 17. The quarterback was released after receiving a citation and was instructed to appear in the Strongsville Mayor’s Court on July 3.
However, according to the citation, he won’t be required to attend in person if he pays the fine beforehand. Sanders was clocked at 101 mph, which is 41 mph over the speed limit for that stretch of road.
During an episode of the “Nightcap” show, Shannon Sharpe asked Johnson to share his views on Sanders’ decision to stop driving cars after multiple speeding violations this month. Sharpe also asked if the quarterback’s tickets are being blown out of proportion.
“Absolutely. Obviously, you’re not supposed to speed based on whatever the speed limit may be,” Johnson said. “I think you just have to be a little more cautious. I think we’ve all sped at some point, we’ve all been pulled over for a ticket at some point.”
“You’re not supposed to do it. At times, people do do it based on where you are, having to get somewhere, being a little late, being behind schedule, or whatever it may be.”
Johnson said Sanders might have had a reason for speeding and gave his opinion on the quarterback’s decision not to drive anymore.
“I’m not sure whether it was morning, noon, or night when he was stopped over. Maybe he might have been trying to get to the stadium first, maybe he wanted to make sure he got there at a certain time,” Johnson said.
“His decision not to drive anymore or have a driver or have an Uber, whatever it may be, so he doesn’t get any more tickets is a step in the right direction to make sure you don’t make that mistake again. Or, you drive like I do and never go over 60 miles an hour.”
Per Alex Darus, Browns insider for Cleveland.com, the latest speeding incident wasn’t Sanders’ first traffic violation this month. The Browns rookie was pulled over by police a couple of weeks ago.
“Sanders was pulled over by Ohio State Highway Patrol in Medina, according to Medina Municipal Court records filed on June 6,” Darus wrote.
Sanders was fined $249, including additional court costs. He was supposed to appear for the arraignment on June 16, but he failed to do so. The next day, he was pulled over again.
