The Chicago Bears may not be done reshaping their secondary just yet. With uncertainty surrounding veteran safety Kevin Byard’s long-term role, speculation is growing that Chicago could turn to free agency to stabilize the back end of its defense.
One intriguing possibility now emerging is a seasoned defensive back who already knows what it takes to win at the highest level.
Chiefs Safety Emerges as Potential Replacement for Kevin Byard in Chicago
A two-time Super Bowl champion has been floated as a potential replacement option for Byard. For a team trying to build a tougher, playoff-ready defense, adding championship experience to the secondary could be a calculated move.
According to PFSN’s latest free agents projections, the Chicago Bears could look toward Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook as a potential replacement for veteran Kevin Byard. Cook, who has been part of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning roster, has developed into a reliable defensive back known for his physical play in the secondary
Byard’s future with the Chicago Bears remains uncertain mainly due to his contract situation. The veteran safety is approaching free agency, and with him entering his early 30s, the Bears could be evaluating younger and more cost-effective options for their secondary.
Since being drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2016, Byard has built an impressive NFL career, earning three First-Team All-Pro honors and three Pro Bowl selections. Known for his elite instincts and ball-hawking ability, Byard recorded 36 career interceptions and 972 tackles, cementing himself as one of the most productive safeties of his generation.
As per PFSN’s report, “Cook also has plenty of experience with reps in the box or out of the slot. His hard-hitting nature and defensive versatility should see NFL teams willing to give him a long-term contract if the Chiefs don’t bring him back.”
Since entering the NFL in 2022, Cook has appeared in 62 games with 47 starts, recording 238 total tackles, including 153 solo tackles and 85 assisted tackles. The hard-hitting defensive back has also registered 1.0 sack, 3 interceptions, and 15 passes defended, while recovering 2 fumbles during his time with Kansas City.
Cook’s production has grown each season. As a rookie in 2022, he recorded 33 tackles, including 22 solo stops, along with 2 passes defended and 1 sack. In 2023, he appeared in 12 games, posting 42 tackles, 1 interception, 2 passes defended, and 2 fumble recoveries, including 1 returned for a touchdown.
He took another step forward in 2024, starting 17 games and finishing with 78 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 5 passes defended, establishing himself as a regular starter in the Chiefs’ secondary.
In 2025, Cook continued his strong form, recording 85 tackles and 6 passes defended in 17 games, highlighting his growing role in Kansas City’s defense.
While replacing a veteran presence like Byard would be challenging, Cook’s defensive versatility could allow him to step into a larger role and help reinforce Chicago’s defensive backfield moving forward.
