Chicago Bears Weighs Caution Against Urgency As Injuries Test Depth

The Bears confirmed they are evaluating every possible path forward with wide receiver Rome Odunze after the rookie aggravated a stress fracture in his foot prior to Week 15. Odunze was a late inactive against Cleveland after the injury resurfaced during pregame warm-ups, marking just the second missed game of his NFL career.

Head coach Ben Johnson acknowledged the setback and explained that more answers will come after Odunze undergoes additional testing on Dec. 16. Speaking through ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, Johnson made it clear that the organization is considering long term consequences as much as immediate availability.

“All options are on the table,” Johnson said, via Cronin. “There may be a case that we need to protect him from himself a little bit so he can help us down the road.”

That mindset highlights the dilemma the Bears face. Odunze has emerged as the Bears’ most productive wide receiver in 2025, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches despite missing time. His chemistry with quarterback Caleb Williams has been a stabilizing force in the offense, making his potential absence against Green Bay significant.

Even so, the Bears’ offense has shown resilience beyond one player. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, the Bears have performed above the league average this season. While the NFL-wide average offense impact score sits at 74.6, the Bears posted a 78.2 mark in 2025, ranking 11th overall.

They assigned the Bears a C+ offensive grade, reflecting a unit that has been effective without being dominant. That production has helped support a 10–4 record, even as injuries have tested the roster.

Johnson’s scheme has consistently distributed targets, with six other players reaching at least 20 receptions through 14 games. Veteran DJ Moore, who scored twice in Week 15, remains a reliable option and further reduces the pressure to rush Odunze back.

The injury outlook grew more complicated when rookie Luther Burden III exited Sunday’s win over Cleveland with an ankle issue. Johnson described Burden as “day by day,” leaving his status for Week 16 uncertain. Burden had stepped into a larger role in Odunze’s absence, recording a career-high six catches for 84 yards before leaving the game.

If the Bears are without both receivers against the Packers, expanded roles would likely fall to Devin Duvernay and Jahdae Walker. While not ideal, the Bears have demonstrated throughout the season that they can adapt offensively.

With multiple paths to clinch a playoff berth and only three regular-season games remaining, the Bears must decide whether urgency or preservation offers the best chance for success beyond Week 16.
