In Week 12 of the NFL season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced off against the Los Angeles Rams. Ultimately, the Buccaneers were dominated by a score of 34-7.
One of the storylines of this game revolved around quarterback Baker Mayfield. During the game, he suffered an injury, and backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater came in for relief. Here’s an update on Mayfield’s status for the upcoming week.
Will Baker Mayfield Play in Week 13 Against the Arizona Cardinals?
In the first half of the game on Sunday night, Mayfield injured his shoulder in the first half and didn’t return to the game after halftime.
Mayfield came out of halftime wearing a sling, immediately raising concern for fans about the severity of the injury and what it would mean going forward.
On Monday, that question was answered for Buccaneers fans. NFL Insider reported, “#Bucs QB Baker Mayfield, who went down on Sunday with a sprained left shoulder, has a low-grade sprain, source said following the MRI. Good news with an eye toward next week.”
Thankfully, the injury to his non-throwing arm is nothing more than a low-grade sprain, according to an MRI. Considering that the injury wasn’t on his throwing arm, there is a possibility that Mayfield can play next week against the Arizona Cardinals.

Mayfield has experienced a career resurgence since joining the Buccaneers, and it’s certainly making the Cleveland Browns regret letting him go.
This season, Mayfield has thrown for 2,406 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 62.7% completion percentage. Additionally, he’s rushed for 216 yards and one touchdown. In PFSN’s Quarterback Impact metrics, he ranks 22nd in the league.
Last season, Mayfield was one of the top quarterbacks in the league. In his second year with the Buccaneers, he threw for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, with a 71.4% completion rate. Last season, he ranked as the seventh-best quarterback in the league according to PFSN’s Quarterback Impact rankings.
Mayfield being able to play next week would be great news for the Buccaneers. The team is currently 6-5, and despite being first place in the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers are right on their tail at 6-6.

If Mayfield can’t play next week, Bridgewater will be the lead signal-caller. Bridgewater was drafted with the 32nd overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Bridgewater showed potential, but suffered a gruesome injury that derailed his career. In total, he’s played for seven different NFL teams.
In his career, he’s thrown for 15182 yards, 75 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. Additionally, he’s rushed for 848 yards and 11 touchdowns.
