Drake Maye struggled against the Seahawks’ defense in the first half of the Super Bowl, as the Patriots were held scoreless.

The first half of Super Bowl 60 at Levi Stadium ended with the New England Patriots scoreless, and Drake Maye was marked by a performance that was well below expectations. The disastrous offensive possessions and sacks suffered by the quarterback did not go unnoticed by Antonio Brown.

Drake Maye Compared To Kenny Pickett By Antonio Brown

On his X page, Brown posted a photo of Kenny Pickett, implying that Maye is facing the same problems Pickett faced in February.

The post came after the Patriots’ offense put Seattle in a favorable field position late in the second quarter of Super Bowl 60. New England’s most recent possession began at its own 2-yard line, courtesy of an excellent punt by the Seahawks’ Michael Dickson.

Although Maye managed to escape the danger zone by connecting on a 9-yard pass to DeMario Douglas on third-and-7, there was not much progress following the play, and the Patriots were ultimately forced to return the ball via punt.

The first penalty of the game came with 3:09 remaining in the second quarter, a false start against Patriots left tackle Will Campbell, compounding the problems for New England’s offense, which struggled against Seattle’s defense.

Maye Suffered 3 Sacks Against the Seahawks In The First Half

During the regular season, Maye handled pressure well, but his postseason performance has shown a quarterback lacking confidence. Maye was sacked five times in each of New England’s first three playoff games, and in the first half against the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, he was sacked three more times.

Maye tends to hold onto the ball longer to try to make big plays. In the postseason, his average time to throw has increased, resulting in more sacks before he could get rid of the ball or run.

Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that the Patriots’ offensive line struggled to contain elite pass rushers at various points in the postseason. Instead of throwing away the ball or making a quick safety pass, Maye often tried to escape pressure by moving around in the pocket, which resulted in sacks for loss of yards.

New England fans’ expectations for the second half are focused on greater protection for their quarterback against Seattle, one of the best defenses in the NFL, which ranks No. 3 in PFSN’s Defense Impact Metric with a B+ grade.
