Anthony Richardson Sr. is one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks in the NFL and had significant promise when he was selected fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. However, his career has gotten off to a rocky start, and with Daniel Jones seizing the quarterback job in Indianapolis and running with it, Richardson’s days with the Colts could soon be numbered.
Green Bay Packers Linked to Anthony Richardson Trade
Through three professional seasons, Richardson has played in only 17 games, starting 15 of them and leading the Colts to an 8-7 record. He was a raw prospect coming out of Florida, having played in only 24 games, with 13 starts, but his physical tools were tantalizing for NFL general managers.
The 6’4″, 244-pound quarterback has a rocket arm and blazing speed, which led many to believe he could be the next great dual-threat quarterback at the NFL level, in the vein of Josh Allen or Cam Newton. Unfortunately for the Colts, it has not worked out that way, and after Jones signed a contract extension, Richardson is believed to be on the trade block.
Former NFL scout John Middlekauff, in a recent segment of his podcast “3 & Out With John Middlekauff,” answered a question about Richardson’s future.
“My guess is he’s traded sometime during the draft,” Middlekauff said. “But I don’t think he’s going to get a shot to start.”
Richardson has shown flashes of immense upside in his NFL career, but has been inconsistent and battled injuries overall. Despite making some jaw-dropping plays in the NFL, he has not done enough to warrant a starting job, completing 50.6% of his passes for 2,400 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
While he has not proven he can be an NFL starting quarterback thus far, he will only turn 24 in May and still possesses the physical tools that could make him a high-end starter if a coaching staff can get the best out of him. His age, upside, and potential cost in a trade make him an intriguing buy-low trade candidate for teams looking for a high-upside developmental backup quarterback.
“There are rumors of the Packers, someone like that, takes a shot and tries to work with him, as a backup,” Middlekauff added. “I think it makes a lot of sense for the Packers.”
Green Bay has a need at backup quarterback after losing Malik Willis in free agency to the Miami Dolphins. Like Richardson, Willis was a quarterback with elite physical tools when he entered the NFL, but was unable to harness them at his first stop.
Green Bay acquired Willis cheaply in a trade with the Tennessee Titans, and after working with Matt LaFleur for a few seasons, revived his career and signed a lucrative contract with the Dolphins to be their starter.
Jordan Love is firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback in Green Bay, ranking No. 4 in PFSN’s Quarterback Impact Metric (QBi) in 2025, but he has missed a little time in each of the past two seasons. Sitting behind Love and working with LaFleur may not be a situation where Richardson can play this season, but it could be the best thing for his potential to become a starting quarterback again.

Richardson will be a name to watch during the draft, as teams look to fill out their depth charts, and potentially move late-round capital for players who have fallen out of favor with their current organizations.
The Colts quarterback will look to join the likes of Willis, Jones, Sam Darnold, Mac Jones, and Baker Mayfield as players who did not live up to expectations early but were able to revive their careers with a new organization.
