New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has rarely left the headlines during the NFL offseason. Vrabel has been the talk of the league after his alleged relationship with former NFL insider Dianna Russini was uncovered in April, and months later, the scandal refuses to die down.
Mike Vrabel Taunted for Bringing Puppy to News Conference
While speaking to reporters during media availability on Friday, Vrabel brought a German Shepherd puppy to the podium to promote Pet Adoption Day. The puppy carried by Vrabel is named BB and wore a Patriots uniform.
The “Pawtriots Initiative,” in conjunction with local animal shelters in New England, is supported by Dr. Dana Kraft to help dogs find new homes.
During Monday’s segment on “92.3 The Fan,” analyst Nick Wilson claimed that Vrabel speaking to reporters with a puppy in his hands was a public relations move to distract from the Russini scandal.
“I think I figured out a theorem that can get you out of any trouble you’ve ever had. Scandalized figure plus puppy equals PR fix,” Wilson said. “I think everybody thought that’s what it was. I gotta say, as somebody who loves dogs, it took a little bit off the Vrabel sting here… He’s had a summer. The man is in the doghouse; he can’t talk about dogs.”

Vrabel and Russini have dominated the headlines after Page Six published intimate pictures of the pair in April. Russini resigned from her job at The Athletic soon after, and Vrabel was forced to miss day three of the 2026 NFL Draft to seek counseling with his family.

Further pictures of the pair in a New York bar and on a boating trip in Tennessee established a lengthy timeline of their alleged relationship. Over the ensuing weeks and months, more details kept the scandal newsworthy as allegations of collusion swirled around the league.
During last week’s segment of the “Jones & Keefe” show, analyst Adam Jones predicted that Vrabel’s saga will follow the Patriots into next season.
“The opener, I still think that’s going to be a dominant storyline,” Jones said. “Going into the opener, it’ll be it’s a Super Bowl rematch, and then Vrabel’s tumultuous offseason… He was on First Take getting asked about it yesterday, the owner of the team, because it’s still, nationally, something that people are curious about… I think, locally, people are curious about it as well.”
Vrabel exceeded expectations in his first season in New England, turning around the Patriots from a 4-13 team to a 14-3 team. He also led the Patriots to their first playoff berth since 2021 and their first AFC East title in six years. Vrabel also became just the eighth coach in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl in his first season, losing 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks.
