The New England Patriots made a notable move at the start of the NFL tampering period, signing former New York Jets lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker to a three-year, $42 million contract. The deal fills a big need at the guard position, but at least one well-known NFL analyst has raised a major concern about the signing.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell Raises Durability Concerns About Alijah Vera-Tucker
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell flagged a potential red flag shortly after the deal was reported, noting Vera-Tucker’s durability issues as a major factor that could complicate the move.
“Alijah Vera-Tucker’s a bit of a surprising choice for the Patriots. Understand the on-field fit at guard, but Mike Vrabel grew publicly exhausted about players who were unavailable through injury during his time in Tennessee, and AVT’s missed 42 of 85 possible games as a pro,” Barnwell posted on X.
Vera-Tucker’s talent is clear when he’s healthy and playing. As a former first-round pick, he has shown he can play several positions on the offensive line, including guard and tackle. This versatility makes him especially valuable when he’s available.
However, Vera-Tucker has missed 42 of a possible 85 games. He has suffered multiple injuries over the past several seasons, limiting his consistency and preventing him from putting together a full season’s worth of playing time.
For the Patriots, who are working to build stability around young quarterback Drake Maye, having a reliable offensive line is crucial, as the team seeks to improve protection after last season, when the offense sometimes struggled to keep Maye safe in the pocket and put him in harm’s way too often.
Why the Patriots Signed Alijah Vera-Tucker Despite Injury History
Even with the concerns about his durability, the Patriots seem to believe that Vera-Tucker’s potential is worth the risk. Last season, the Patriots compiled a 74.5 PFSN NFL Team OL Impact grade, which marked 12th in the league.
New England signed the 26-year-old to a three-year, $42 million contract, averaging $14 million per year. The deal also has up to $6 million in incentives, which gives the Patriots some protection if injuries remain an issue.
When he’s healthy, Vera-Tucker offers exactly what the Patriots need on the inside of their offensive line. He’s strong in run blocking and can play different positions if other injuries happen.
If Vera-Tucker can stay healthy, the Patriots might have picked up one of the best interior linemen in free agency. His steady play at guard could help strengthen the offensive line and give Maye a better chance to develop.
