The NFL offseason has hit a lull as OTAs begin to get underway. However, there is one potential trade that has been in the works for a while that will likely become official once the calendar turns to June.
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to trade wide receiver A.J. Brown, but they are waiting until after June 1 so they don’t get stuck with a massive dead cap hit. All signs point to the Eagles trading Brown to the New England Patriots, and now a former Patriot is saying that the trade is “almost a done deal.”
Jason McCourty Reveals A.J. Brown Trade Is ‘Almost a Done Deal’
After the tension between Brown and the Eagles last season, most people predicted the sides were headed for a divorce this offseason. The Eagles used their first-round pick on wide receiver Makai Lemon, all but solidifying Brown will get traded.
Recently, former Patriots’ Super Bowl champion Jason McCourty joined Kay Adams on her show “Up & Adams,” where they discussed the potential Brown trade.
“All the people on the inside continue to echo the same sentiment that it’s almost a done deal that he is going to be a New England Patriot,” McCourty said.

Brown would immediately become the best pass-catcher on the Patriots while helping quarterback Drake Maye take the passing attack to the next level. Last season, Maye had a breakout year, throwing for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns to finish as the MVP runner-up. He did that without an elite WR1, and adding Brown into the mix should only help him and the rest of the offense.
Last season, Brown earned an 80.9 grade in PFSN’s WR Impact metric, which ranked No. 20 among all wide receivers. In 2024, Brown posted a 91.4 grade and finished as the third-best WR in the league.
Brown signed a three-year, $96 million extension with the Eagles in 2024. He is under contract through the 2029 season, with cap hits under $30 million each year.
The Patriots have the cap space to take on Brown, mostly because Maye is still on his rookie contract. The Patriots are going all in, and Maye is cheap, which makes adding Brown a smart move for them.
Coming off a Super Bowl appearance, the Patriots want to show that last season was not a fluke. Despite having plenty of issues surrounding their coach this offseason, the Patriots have the talent in place to be competitive again, and it will be interesting to see what the trade for Brown looks like assuming it becomes official in June.
