The Patriots moved from a four-win team to the Super Bowl in one season. The next step is to go from good to consistently great. New England must decide how to protect Drake Maye and build a receiver room that Seattle never had to respect. One analyst believes the clearest upgrade could come from the free agent market.
Ben Solak Connects Alec Pierce to New England Fit
On the “Up and Adams Show”, ESPN analyst Ben Solak listed his top five free-agent fits for the upcoming market. He placed Colts receiver Alec Pierce with the Patriots at No.5. Solak framed the match as a way to add a missing element to Maye’s game.
“Alec Pierce to the Patriots, I’m very enthusiastic about. Pierce is this big downfield receiver, most explosive receptions per touch this year in the NFL. Drake Maye, we’ve seen be a highly explosive passer, has had a great downfield ball. Stefon Diggs doesn’t really have that juice, right? Demario Douglas is kind of their speed guy. You really saw the Seahawks not fear those two players in particular.
“I think you’d like to see a bigger, stronger X receiver who can win some of those backside balls, some of those contested balls, but then also has the ability to win with speed down the field.”

Pierce would arrive with a profile that matches that description. He averaged 21.3 yards per reception this season and became the first player since Flipper Anderson in 1990 to lead the league in yards per catch in consecutive seasons.
He topped the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career and posted an 84.6 WRi score that ranked ninth in PFSN’s WRi metric. Pierce dropped just one of his 84 targets and produced a targeted passer rating of 113.7.
Free agency opens with the legal tampering period on Monday, March 9, at 12:00 p.m. ET, and contracts can be signed when the league year begins on Wednesday, March 11, at 4:00 p.m. ET. The receiver market could thin quickly if the Dallas Cowboys franchise tags George Pickens, which would leave Pierce as the top wideout available.
New England’s need became clear in the postseason. Seattle’s defense, ranked No.1 in PFSN’s DEFi metric, crowded short routes and forced the Patriots to win outside the numbers. Only Mack Hollins was able to do so. His efforts were not enough to carry the Patriots’ passing attack.
Pierce has 17 career touchdowns and a reputation for stretching coverage. Pairing that skill set with Maye’s willingness to push the ball downfield offers a vision for how the Patriots could reshape their passing game when the market opens in March.
