Based on recent developments, Brandon Aiyuk’s time with the San Francisco 49ers appears to be nearing an end. In the weeks leading up to this situation, the franchise’s approach to contract negotiations reportedly caused increasing frustration for the wide receiver behind the scenes.
TJ Houshmandzadeh Disagrees With 49ers’ Handling of Brandon Aiyuk Negotiations
Former wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh said on the “Speak Easy” podcast that the 49ers are conducting improper negotiations with one of the franchise’s key players.
TJ Houshmandzadeh on Brandon Aiyuk:
– “What he did last year is kinda crazy.” – “If you’re a team and you give him a good contract, is this what you’re going to get?” – “He wants to play football, I do know that. He wants to play football with Jayden Daniels as his… pic.twitter.com/AmEMjg1WhY — Coach Yac 🗣 (@Coach_Yac) March 12, 2026
“There were some things that the Niners were doing that I’m like, it was dumb,” Houshmandzadeh said. “And so it pissed him off. He was willing to take less from other teams just because the Niners was doing dumb s***. And so even though you signed a contract and this would, I’d be, I’m happy that I’m signing this contract, but I’m still mad.”
“That’s why you got to kind of be careful. You got to talk these things through when you sign this contract. Hey, are we good? Everything all right, you know? And when he goes and signs with the Commanders, that’s his love for the game, his passion for the game, because one thing he has is discipline.”
Although trade negotiations have been attempted in recent weeks, Aiyuk’s market value reportedly fell after he suffered serious knee injuries during the 2024 season, and internal conflicts with the front office intensified, according to Adam Schefter.
Schefter recently indicated that Aiyuk’s current physical health remains uncertain, which is now deterring teams from pursuing a direct trade. With trade options dwindling, contract termination increasingly appears likely, which would allow Aiyuk to pursue free agency and prove his recovery on a short-term deal.
Aiyuk Faces Uncertain Future in San Francisco
Recently, the 49ers voided about $27 million in guaranteed money from Aiyuk’s contract after reports that he did not meet contractual requirements regarding physical rehab and team communication.
Despite these developments, Schefter’s initial prediction of a release at the start of the league year has not come to pass. The ESPN reporter also noted the 49ers may retain the player longer than anticipated. With no remaining guaranteed money owed, the team lacks a financial incentive to cut him and can wait to see if a team urgently needs a receiver after the initial wave of free-agent signings.
By releasing him with a post-June 1 designation, the team will clear about $6.3 million in cap space, according to Spotrac, and allocate the dead cap more effectively.
Aiyuk’s 2024 Injury and Fallout
During the 2024 season, Aiyuk, who ranked No. 4 in the PFSN WR Impact metric with an A- grade in the 2023 season, suffered ACL, MCL, and meniscus tears. Following his attempt to return to the field, his distant behavior angered head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.
