‘Impossible To Know If He’ll Stay Clean’ — NFL Insider Reveals AFC Team is Not Expected To Pursue Brendan Sorsby

According to a long-time insider, the Cleveland Browns are unlikely to pursue Brendan Sorsby in the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft.

Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby is planning to declare for the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft, and he could become the first player to be drafted in the first round of it since Dave Brown went to the New York Giants in 1992, but if he does, it’s unlikely to be the Cleveland Browns.

Despite QB Needs, Cleveland Browns Are Unlikely To Pursue Brendan Sorsby

According to Mary Kay Cabot of “Cleveland.com,” the Browns are “unlikely” to place a bid on Sorsby in the 2026 NFL Supplemental Draft.

Sorsby has been mired in serious controversy over the last few months after admitting to a gambling addiction and checking himself into an inpatient rehabilitation facility in Arizona earlier this year. It was later revealed that he wagered about $90,000 on thousands of bets, including on the Indiana Hoosiers football team while he was a member.

“The Browns are unlikely to bid on Brendan Sorsby, who’s been in inpatient rehab for a gambling addiction, in the supplemental draft now that he plans to enter it, a league source tells Cleveland.com,” Cabot wrote. “But one can never say never in this complicated situation.”

“The thing that makes it difficult is that he’s so early in his recovery process that it’s impossible to know if he’ll stay clean,” she added. “Will the Browns be willing to take a chance on Sorsby? Early indications say no, but that can always change.”

This decision to enter the NFL’s Supplemental Draft followed a Texas judge’s injunction granted to Sorsby after the NCAA ruled he was ineligible. He would’ve been able to play this upcoming season, but was willing to miss the first two games.

However, in the aftermath, the Big 12 took legal action of its own, and Sorsby’s decision followed.

Cabot mentioned that head coach Todd Monken’s comments about Sorsby at the Browns Foundation Golf Tournament that happened on June 1.

“I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road,” Monken said. “That’s my opinion, that’s not (general manager Andrew Berry’s). I like the quarterbacks that we have. I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent, right?”

“But from my end of it, kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback if he’s ever eligible to even play in the NFL,” Monken added.

As for Berry, he said the team will “do the work” on all prospects.

Cabot also mentioned that the Browns have done “extensive background” on Sorsby, who’s listed at 6’3″, 235 pounds, and is a dual-threat signal-caller. Last season with the Bearcats, Sorsby finished with a PFSN CFB QB Impact score of 88.2, which was 10th among all signal callers in college football.

If the Browns were to bring in Sorsby, he’d compete with Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and Taylen Green.

Green is a 2026 draft pick, and as for the rest, none of them have finished with a PFSN QB Impact score of higher than 56.7 as a member of the team, which Sanders had last season (40th in the NFL that season).

Should Sorsby be selected by the Browns or anyone else, he’ll be the first player since Jalen Thompson was picked in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Supplemental Draft.

Sorsby will hold a Pro Day on July 10, 2026, in Southlake, Texas.
