Training camp is starting for all teams, and the New England Patriots will be among the most closely followed. Fresh off a Super Bowl run amidst a great sophomore season from Drake Maye, the Patriots were involved in controversy during the offseason due to the scandal involving Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini, which dominated the storylines.
Will Mike Vrabel’s Scandal Become a Distraction for the Patriots During the Season?
With football returning, the expectation is that the noise around the scandal will naturally go away. Vrabel, however, will be in the headlines plenty of times in the next few months, and the alleged association with Russini will be impossible to forget.
The Patriots will take part in the season’s kickoff in a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks. Adam Jones and Rich Keefe, from the “Jones and Keefe” show at WEEI, recently discussed the effects of the scandal on the team. And their view is clear: this will be a distraction, as New England prepares to play against Seattle:
“The opener, I still think that’s going to be a dominant storyline,” Jones said. “Going into the opener, it’ll be it’s a Super Bowl rematch, and then Vrabel’s tumultuous offseason… He was on First Take getting asked about it yesterday, the owner of the team, because it’s still, nationally, something that people are curious about… I think, locally, people are curious about it as well.”

Vrabel’s scandal affected the Patriots during the offseason. Apart from the distractions it caused, the head coach missed Day 3 of the 2026 draft to be close to his family. He returned to the facilities two days later.
For Russini, the effects were much worse. After pictures and details continued to emerge, she resigned from her position as an insider at The Athletic. She also referred to herself as a “former journalist” in a recent New York Times piece about the scandal. Russini has also stepped away from public view since the story broke out.
Distractions won’t help what is already expected to be a tough mission for the Patriots when the season starts. In Super Bowl 60, a dominant defensive performance from the Seahawks ignited their 29-13 win, the second Super Bowl win for the franchise. It was a disappointing ending to a great season for New England.
With Drake Maye entering his third year and already having a Super Bowl berth in his career, he can take the lessons learned from the past defeat and improve even more.
