“All right, Caitlin, you know what? I’m so thankful for all your support from day one, being at Mankato, and I remember coming back and telling you that I was going down this journey, and you saying, I don’t know, maybe you should get a real job. I did get a real job, but a little bit different than we thought,” Thielen said.
“But just your support, your dedication, you sticking with me even when you probably shouldn’t have, and just all that you do outside of football, I’m so thankful for everything you’ve done.”
He continued by thanking his children, shifting from reflection to what comes next. “My kids, I’m so thankful that you got to see Dad play. You guys are great kids, and I’m so thankful to be your dad,” he added. “I’m excited to be able to, all that support that you’ve given me over the years, I’m excited to turn that back around and give you guys.”
Thielen then acknowledged the moment itself, admitting it caught him off guard. “Sorry, that was too long, I tend to talk too much,” Thielen said. “I didn’t think I was going to cry, I haven’t done that in a long time.”
The emotion reflected how much the journey meant, especially given where it started. Thielen’s path to the NFL remains a rare success story. He entered the league in May 2013 as an undrafted tryout out of Minnesota State and developed into a two-time Pro Bowl receiver with the Vikings.

Early in that journey, he was interviewing for a dental equipment sales job while still chasing a roster spot, a moment that underscored how uncertain his path once was.
The receiver eventually became a cornerstone in the Vikings’ passing game. Thielen finished his Vikings career with 55 touchdown receptions, the third-most in franchise history behind Cris Carter and Randy Moss. He also ranks fourth in receptions with 542 and fifth in receiving yards with 6,708. His peak came during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, when he posted back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns and earned Pro Bowl recognition both years.
His route-running and reliable hands made him a trusted option in critical moments, including several memorable plays against the New Orleans Saints. This was highlighted by a 43-yard catch in the fourth quarter of the 2020 playoffs that set up a game-winning touchdown in overtime.
Thielen spent the majority of his career with the Vikings before later stops with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers. His final season in 2025 was split between the Vikings and the Steelers.
