Injury woes continue for Spain’s Paula Badosa, who retired during her quarterfinal match at the Berlin Tennis Open on Friday, June 20. The Spaniard later shared a message expressing her heartbreak after the unexpected withdrawal.
Badosa has struggled to find her rhythm this season, with a recurring back injury hurting her form. The former world No. 2 missed most of the clay-court swing, including late withdrawals in Madrid and Rome. She returned with a quarterfinal run in Strasbourg, followed by a third-round exit at the French Open.
Paula Badosa Disappointed As Injury Forces Her To Withdraw From the Berlin Tennis Open
Badosa was gaining momentum at the start of the grass-court swing in Berlin. She beat home favorite Eva Lys and the USA’s Emma Navarro in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals. Just as things began to look promising, she showed signs of discomfort during her match against China’s Wang Xinyu on Friday.
She called for a medical timeout during the first set, receiving treatment on court in hopes of easing the pain. Still struggling to find her footing, Badosa dropped the opening set 1-6. In the opening game of the second set, down 0-40, she decided to retire.
As with other recent tournaments, injury forced Badosa out again, with Berlin now the latest setback. The Spaniard shared her disappointment following the withdrawal on X.
“I’m so tired of this,” she wrote.

With her Berlin withdrawal, Badosa’s status for Wimbledon is now uncertain, but a return would be highly anticipated.
