Brian Thomas Jr. turned heads in his rookie season. Despite the sky falling around him, the rookie was able to deliver one of the best seasons by any first-year player in the NFL in 2024. As such, expectations are sky-high for the receiver.
However, the receiver was reminded that anything can happen in the NFL at any time for better or worse. Here’s a look at what took place at minicamp.
Brian Thomas Jr.’s Sophomore Season Off to Shaky Start
According to Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco in two June 11 posts on X, the Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver fell hard at the end of a pass play, which initially led to him going inside.
However, the reporter noted a somewhat encouraging development.

“Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. was down on the ground after landing hand after a pass play that was broken up by Tyson Campbell. He’s heading off the field and going inside,” he initially posted.
Minutes later, he posted that he spotted the wide receiver with a helmet in hand on the sideline.
“Thomas is back out on the sideline with his helmet,” he added, quoting his previous post.
Of course, on one hand, seeing him merely on the sidelines isn’t the best case scenario. However, the worst-case scenario would be not seeing him back at practice at all. Seeing him in street clothes without a helmet would have been almost as bad. Liam Coen gave an update, claiming the team was using caution with the receiver.
Jaguars coach Liam Coen said WR Brian Thomas (shoulder) did not suffer a serious injury and could have gone back into drills but was held out of the rest of practice as a precautionary measure.

“Jaguars coach Liam Coen said WR Brian Thomas (shoulder) did not suffer a serious injury and could have gone back into drills but was held out of the rest of practice as a precautionary measure,” he added in a third post.
Coen said it wasn’t a serious injury, but didn’t say there wasn’t an injury, which means his status is something to keep an eye on.
Thomas Missing Time Would Kick Door Wide Open for Star Rookie Prospect
Injuries are the enemy of every franchise and player in the NFL. No one involved wants an injury to happen to a player. However, one of the truths about the league is that when the door closes on one player, it opens the door for another.
If Thomas misses time, it would give a huge opportunity to Travis Hunter, the star two-way prospect with already a potential in the clouds. Of course, while Hunter is likely to get plenty of opportunities in 2025 regardless, losing Thomas would essentially give Trevor Lawrence no choice but to lock onto Hunter in most passing situations.
Some may argue that giving Hunter the spotlight too soon would backfire, but seemingly, if there’s anything clear about Hunter, it’s that he is starving for as big an opportunity as possible.
Of course, with him potentially taking on a greater workload, it would seemingly take away from his ability to get on the defensive side of the ball, which would not be the most welcome idea for the unit that finished almost last in PFSN’s Defense+ metrics.
Will the potential injury change the Jaguars’ strategy going forward?
