Coco Gauff Reveals Going Through a ‘Down Period’ After American Elections and Her Conversation With Mother After French Open Win

Coco Gauff talked about how her mother kept her motivated during tough times after winning the French Open title on Saturday, June 7.

Coco Gauff won her first French Open on June 7, after defeating the World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 in an exciting final. With this historic win, she captured her second Grand Slam, adding to her 2023 US Open title.

With this win, Gauff also ended her eight-month title drought since her 2024 WTA Finals victory in Riyadh. Coming into this Major, she had fallen short of clinching two titles, losing in the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open.

Coco Gauff Talks About Patriotism and Her Mother’s Significant Role in Her Victories

During her post-match interview, Coco Gauff discussed her country’s situation. Addressing the queries, she said, “There’s a lot going on in our country right now with things like everything. But just to be able to represent that and a representation of people that look like me in America, who maybe don’t feel as supported during this time period, and just be that reflection of hope and light for those people.”

Gauff also talked about how her mother helped her through difficult times and motivated her for title wins amid her recent struggles: “I remember after the election, and everything, it kind of felt like a down period a little bit, and my mom told me during Riyadh, just try to win the tournament, just to give something for people to smile for.”

The American also emphasized her pride in representing her country and said, “That’s what I was thinking about today when holding that (trophy) and then seeing the flags in the crowd, it means a lot.”

Adding to this, the 2023 US Open winner said, “But I’m definitely patriotic, I’m proud to be American, and I’m proud to represent the Americans.”

At 21, Gauff has cemented herself as one of the biggest stars in the circuit, with her French Open win underscoring her adaptability on clay. With two Grand Slams and a WTA Finals title on her CV already, her career trajectory has been nothing short of impressive so far.

Gauff’s Road to Redemption in Paris

Coco Gauff entered the French Open with momentum and asserted her dominance in Paris, dropping just one set (against Madison Keys) during the entire run.

She comfortably got past the likes of wildcard Lois Boisson, Marie Bouzková, Ekaterina Alexandrova, and Madison Keys to reach the final.

This victory held personal significance for Gauff, who had lost the 2022 French Open final to Iga Świątek.

With this result, her record this season improved to 30-8 and solidified her World No. 2 ranking, and also became the first American since Serena Williams (2015) to win the French Open title.
