Travis Hunter’s Relationship With Deion Sanders: How the Generational Prospect Essentially Became Coach Prime’s Fourth Son

Travis Hunter and Deion Sanders have developed a real father-son type of bond, forged in football at the University of Colorado.

Travis Hunter, by all indications and backed by film, is a generational talent. His style of play and versatility are uncommon—you could go decades without seeing another like him. Perhaps the greatest cornerback in NFL history, Deion Sanders has a unique perspective on Hunter, one that goes far beyond football.

In the world of elite athleticism, real recognizes real. And for Sanders, who coached Hunter at the University of Colorado, the bond runs deeper—he sees him as another son.

Travis Hunter Earns Deion Sanders’ Respect

No matter where Hunter lands in this year’s NFL Draft—or what he accomplishes beyond football—Sanders will remain a grounding force in his life. Their relationship extends far beyond the game. During the Heisman Trophy ceremony, Hunter gave an emotional shoutout to his coach and his quarterback at Colorado.

“I want to thank Coach Prime, Shedeur. Man, y’all changed my life forever,” Hunter said. “That one simple phone call, Shedeur… look where I’m at. Man, that’s crazy, bro. It’s crazy. I’m trying not to get emotional because I know our last game is coming up soon.

“Coach Prime, I’m going to whoop you on that lake tomorrow or whenever we get the chance. But thank you, man—you changed my life forever.”

Originally committed to Florida State, Hunter made headlines when he flipped his commitment to Jackson State after being recruited by none other than one of the greatest players in FSU history. Deion Sanders still holds the record for most punt returns (126) and punt return yardage (1,492) at the school.

Father-Son Bond with Colorado Head Coach

In a Fox Sports interview last fall, Hunter shared the story of how their bond began in an unlikely setting.

“It’s just an unbreakable father-son bond,” Hunter said. “It’s like we’ve known each other for years, even though we just met three years ago. That was my first time meeting him—when he called me from the hospital bed [recovering from foot surgery], letting me know he wanted me to come play for him. I can’t explain it enough. I love him so much, and I know he loves me just as much.”

While Hunter’s actual father has always been present in his life, he was previously unable to attend major events due to legal restrictions. Travis Hunter Sr. is serving probation related to gun and drug charges stemming from his arrent during a traffic stop in November 2023, according to the New York Times.

That changed thanks to a recent court order that will allow him to attend the 2025 NFL Draft at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. As reported by BET, the moment marks a powerful turning point in their relationship.

During his Heisman acceptance speech, Hunter addressed his absent father with heartfelt words: “He’s not here and wasn’t able to make it, but I know you’re watching on TV. I did it for you, man.”

Sanders knows what Hunter is capable of—and he’s made no secret of it. During a team meeting, Sanders shared publicly what he’s told Hunter many times in private.

“I want you to know this in front of everybody: You know we love you. We got you,” Sanders said. “We appreciate you. You are HIM.”

With those words, Sanders not only reinforced Hunter’s talent but solidified their bond in front of the team—and now, the world. In sports and in life, real recognizes real.
