Bill Belichick’s first North Carolina press conference since general manager Michael Lombardi resigned was supposed to focus on East Tennessee State. Instead, the opening stretch became a tense exercise in asking questions the Tar Heels’ coach had already been told not to answer.
UNC said beforehand that Belichick, players and university employees would not discuss an ongoing investigation into the football program. Reporters still pressed him on institutional control, Steve Belichick’s medical leave, and the allegations investigators have been asking witnesses about.

Chris Lea, who was sitting in the room, did not undersell the atmosphere.

When someone asked what had made the session so uncomfortable, Lea explained further: “Questions about control of the program, the tension in the room, UNC higher-ups watching, tough question after tough question being hurled his way.”
WRAL’s Pat Welter was responsible for several of those questions. After Belichick declined to discuss why investigators were asking about sex and drug use within the program, Welter asked what indications existed that the coach still had control.
“I think it’s, I mean, if you’re around here every day, I think you’d see it,” Belichick replied.

Welter later said: “Bill Belichick did his best “on to ETSU” in his first press conference since all the news of last week. He did acknowledge the seriousness of the investigation, but also hid behind it. I tried to press him with questions he could or should be able to answer.”

Fans Split Over How Much Bill Belichick Could Really Say
Some viewers thought the questioning crossed into territory reporters had already been told was off limits.

Another reaction went in the opposite direction. “Even Bill Belichick knows the end is near for this failed experiment,” Jeff Wright wrote bluntly.

WRAL reported that outside lawyers hired by UNC have asked witnesses about allegations involving drug use by Steve Belichick and, separately, possible sexual relationships involving football staff and players. Steve Belichick remains on medical leave, while Lombardi resigned Sept. 3.
The allegations remain under investigation, and UNC has not announced findings establishing them as fact.
The football side of Belichick’s program at least opened with a win, as North Carolina beat TCU 15-10. PFN’s updated 2026 Defense Impact rankings list the Tar Heels No. 41 nationally with an 80.1 grade after Week 1.
Belichick repeatedly tried to move the conversation toward ETSU. The reaction to Monday’s press conference showed that the questions surrounding his program are not moving nearly as quickly.
