The Heisman chorus was loud, proud, and strong tonight as electric Miami Hurricanes wideout Malachi Toney decided to draw up the first argument for his case for the trophy this season.
The superstar receiver lit up Stanford on a night where he also broke a Hurricanes Football record, making it clear that he’s the one to watch when it comes to the Heisman conversation.
Hurricanes’ Malachi Toney Dominates in 2026 Week 1
Toney already dominated in his freshman season, leading the nation with a whopping 109 receptions for 1,211 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Playing in his first game of the 2026 season, the Hurricanes receiver picked up right where he left off, dominating anyone who dared to cover him.
He set the tone early by scoring a 23-yard touchdown to get the Hurricanes out to an early 7-0 lead over Stanford in the first quarter. They never looked back.
Toney was unstoppable while catching passes from Miami QB Darian Mensah, hauling in 11 receptions for 229 yards and three touchdowns. That’s more passing yards than Stanford had by the end of the third quarter (197). Yikes.
Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press later reported that Toney broke a 42-year-old school record held by Eddie Brown by surpassing the 220-receiving-yard mark.

Yet, what was the defense supposed to do? As Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante pointed out, Toney looked uncoverable out there.

Toney is still so young, yet he already looks like a polished route-runner. His quickness and elusiveness are something to behold. As Trevor Sikkema said, “Malachi Toney is completely unguardable. I mean, these corners are beaten after his second step time and time again. Special player.”
ESPN’s Pat McAfee referred to Toney as “Baby Jesus,” saying he’s putting up “biblical numbers.”

McAfee’s reaction may take the cake, but the CFB community was active on Friday night, eager to chime in on Toney’s big game.

Heck, at one point, it looked like Toney may threaten college football’s single-game receiving yardage record, which sits at 405, for those curious. Like many others watching the game, Tej Seth ended up firing up the old Google machine to see what number Toney could be targeting after his “unbelievable” start.
“What Malachi Toney is doing right now is genuinely unbelievable to watch. Having the type of game that makes you Google what the single-game receiving yards record is (it’s 405, and he’s at 174 yards with three minutes left).”
Toney was off to an incredible start. As PFN CEO Matt Cannata noted, the Miami receiver had already tallied 182 receiving yards by halftime. Other Hurricanes receivers had just 71, combined.
“Heading into halftime, Malachi Toney has 182 receiving yards. Five other Miami receivers have a combined 71 yards.”
The numbers Toney had accumulated just by halftime already placed him alongside several college football legends. Josh Dubow of the Associated Press compiled a list, and the names on it all ended up being drafted at least 34th or higher in the NFL.

“The only person on this list who won the Heisman won the award BEFORE making this list. Should have struck the Heisman pose in the opener like Baby Jesus.”
As Skip Bayless said, both Mensah and Toney just tossed their names into the Heisman conversation; now they just need to maintain this momentum.
“Darian Mensah, Lil Wayne’s client, just launched his Heisman campaign. Then again, so did Malachi Toney.”
While Malachi may not be related to Kadarius Toney, his dad is actually former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown. No, not the one who once played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and almost the Oakland Raiders. Toney’s dad played from 2003 to 2005 for the Buffalo Bills and Washington.
Now, Toney, who’s just 18, looks like an early candidate to follow in his father’s footsteps and someday enter the NFL Draft pool. However, pro teams will have to wait to get their hands on the shifty receiver until the 2028 NFL Draft.
For now, fans of the Hurricanes get to enjoy their newest superstar dominating in South Beach for the next three seasons.
