‘Borderline Unprecedented Media Situation’ — CBS’ Silence on Tony Romo Statement Has NFL World Predicting a $72M Legal Fight Is Coming

Tony Romo’s $72 million CBS future is uncertain after his OWI case and a public statement that received no response from the network.

Tony Romo’s future as CBS Sports’ lead NFL analyst has become increasingly uncertain as the network and its longtime broadcaster appear to be moving in different directions. Romo publicly addressed his recent legal trouble and said he hopes to return, but CBS has not offered a public response to that plan.

That silence is now raising questions about what could happen to his remaining contract.

CBS Silence Raises Questions About Tony Romo’s Remaining $72M Payout

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Romo pleaded no contest to a civil OWI offense in Wisconsin and released a statement Tuesday acknowledging his mistakes while outlining his plans for recovery. Romo also said he hopes to return to CBS after focusing on his health and family.

Romo explained that multiple back surgeries left him dealing with persistent pain, which contributed to his dependence on pain medication and eventually an over-reliance on alcohol. He took responsibility for his actions, saying, “None of this is an excuse. These are my failures, and I take responsibility for them.”

He also described treatment as the immediate priority and said he is working with doctors to address his health. Romo concluded by saying he was turning his focus toward his health and family and, eventually, “my return to CBS,” while asking for privacy.

CBS, however, has not publicly backed that expectation. According to the information provided by Puck reporter John Ourand, the network had no comment on Romo’s statement and instead pointed back to its previous one-line announcement placing him on leave until further notice.

That response has generated speculation on X that Romo’s return may not be part of CBS’ current plans.

FOS media and entertainment reporter Ryan Glasspiegel captured that uncertainty on X, writing, “No statement from CBS corporate or colleagues backing Tony Romo in his recovery = we are still in mid innings.”

Glasspiegel then pointed to the unusual nature of the situation, adding, “The longer this goes without a statement of support for him getting help or something like that, the more it seems like he might have gone rogue saying he will be back. This is borderline unprecedented media situation.”

The lack of coordination could become even more significant because Romo reportedly has four years and about $72 million remaining on the ten-year, $180 million contract he signed with CBS in 2020. If the network wants to end the agreement rather than negotiate a buyout, the contract’s morals clause could become central to the dispute.

Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr. reacted to CBS’ silence, writing, “No public support from CBS is telling.”

NFL analyst Brian Webber believes Romo’s public approach could also strengthen his position in negotiations.

“Romo’s team played this brilliantly,” Webber wrote. “If CBS goes ahead and fires him, they’ll look tone-deaf for punishing someone who has admitted he has a problem and is seeking treatment. Could give them additional leverage in getting more cash in settlement talks for years left on his deal.”

Mike Florio has similarly suggested that attempting to terminate the contract for cause could lead to a major legal fight, particularly if CBS invokes the morals clause. If the agreement requires arbitration, the dispute would likely be handled privately rather than in open court.

CBS now faces a choice between bringing Romo back, reaching a settlement or fighting over the remaining $72 million. Whatever comes next could determine his future with the network.
