With the 2026-27 NFL season quickly approaching and teams being forced to make roster decisions for the 53-man roster, there were four teams that opted to keep four quarterbacks, and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel provided his thoughts on the teams’ decision to keep that many signal-callers.
Chase Daniel Questions Browns, Steelers, Eagles, Vikings, and Falcons
According to Albert Breer of “Sports Illustrated,” the four teams rostering four quarterbacks include the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles.
Another team keeping four quarterbacks is the Atlanta Falcons.
Interesting QB developments …
– Eagles keep 4 (Hurts, McKee, Dalton, Payton). – Steelers keep 4 (Rodgers, Rudolph, Howard, Allar). – Vikings keep 4 (Murray, McCarthy, Wentz, Brosmer). – Browns keep 4 (Watson, Sanders, Green, and Gabriel on IR). — Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) August 30, 2026
The quarterbacks each team is keeping include the following:
- Eagles: Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Andy Dalton, and Cole Payton.
- Steelers: Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Drew Allar.
- Vikings: Kyler Murray, J.J. McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer.
- Browns: Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, and Dillon Gabriel.
- Falcons: Tua Tagovailoa, Michael Penix Jr., Cooper Rush, and Jack Strand.

As for the Browns, though, Gabriel will open the season on injured reserve, so while technically they’re keeping four quarterbacks, him on IR will open up a roster spot. So, their starter will be Watson, followed by the “most popular backup QB ever,” Sanders.
Of those quarterbacks above, Hurts had the highest PFN QB Impact Score with a 76.2 grade, which was 16th in the NFL.

In response to these reports, Daniel, who played 13 seasons in the NFL playing for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Chargers, Detroit Lions, and Eagles, had this to say:
“Carrying 4 QB’s into the season makes zero sense to me. Roster spots are WAY too valuable…carry 2 guys and move on. Browns, Steelers, Eagles, Vikings & Falcons,” he said with an eye emoji at the end.

Roster spots are, of course, quite valuable. Those one or two spots could be legitimate depth, players.
That said, for a team like the Steelers, it makes sense. Rodgers has one more year to go, Rudolph is a legitimate backup, and Howard and Allar are still being developed. It would be detrimental to them to be Rodgers’ backup right now.
The Vikings keeping Brosmer is interesting. Brosmer started two games last season, and in his first-ever start, which came on the road against the Seattle Seahawks, he threw for 126 yards, zero touchdowns, and four interceptions. He then followed that up with 51 passing yards in a 23-10 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 17.
