Caitlin Clark is creeping into conversations that establish her as an offensive engine in her own right. She might be ‘the system’ a team runs their offense around, and understandably so, given her prowess on that end of the floor.
This has led her to break multiple records for combined points and assists. Conversations surrounding her, due to these records, have led to ‘Babe Ruth comparisons’.
The WNBA world, upon hearing this, couldn’t decide which side of the picket fence they are on regarding the take.
The WNBA World Is Divided Over ‘Bizarre’ Caitlin Clark – Babe Ruth Comparisons
An X user with over 60k followers weighed in with a bold comparison, writing, “This is like Babe Ruth [expletive],” after pointing out the absurdity of CC’s stats from this season.
“Caitlin Clark is such a bizarre athlete because she is somehow the most famous women’s basketball player ever and still underrated. No WNBA player other than her has more than one 30-point, 10-assist game. Clark has 6 – 2 more than the rest of the league COMBINED – and she just had two back-to-back,” Swann wrote.
“She had more 30-point, 10 assist games in the last 4 days than any other player in the league has had in their careers. She has 4 this season, meaning she tied the rest of the league combined in one year and she’s broken her own record 4 times in one season.”

One segment of WNBA fans online simply wasn’t having it.
One wrote, “Calling Caitlin Clark ‘underrated’ as if the whole sports media establishment hasn’t elevated her as the Great White Hope and ‘savior’ of women’s basketball is crazy work.”
“Do you even know who A’ja Wilson is?” they went on to add.

Wilson is certainly more accomplished as a basketball player than Clark currently is. Not only is Las Vegas Aces star the current frontrunner to win MVP, but she’s also won the award four times.
Wilson is also a 3-time champ and won the Finals MVP twice. So, this reaction isn’t all too far-fetched from this fan.
“Underrated?! Are you kidding?” questioned another fan.
One pointed out the simple fact: “Ruth won Championships.”

Ruth, over the course of a 22-season career, won seven championships. Clark has yet to make it a Finals series. However, it is merely her third season in a league that is at the prime of its talent pool.
On the flipside, there were fans who agreed wholeheartedly with the comparison to Ruth.
“They literally never seen what she can do before. And yet we have to hear dumb [expletive] arguments every day. This must be what LeBron fans feel like lmaoooo,” one user wrote, calling out onlookers for not appreciating what they deem to be greatness in real time.

Clark is undoubtedly one of, if not the most marketable, players in women’s basketball today.
Putting her brilliant stats from this season aside, the Fever’s regular-season game against the Sky averaged 3.31 million viewers across NBC and Peacock. This made it the most-watched regular-season WNBA game since the league’s opening weekend.

It’s clear that Clark is a major draw for fans, and the fact that she makes her bones on offense, the more entertaining side of the floor, has helped in her popularity.
This season, she became the first player in WNBA history to record 800+ points and 300+ assists. She’s also the first in a season to log at least 300+ assists and 100+ three-pointers.
With all of the records she’s set, the ‘Ruth to Clark’ pipeline does start to make a bit of sense. But given how deified the MLB legend is, it certainly is a tough pill to swallow, and discourse over the comparison will rage on for years to come.
