Bill Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels recorded the first upset of the college football season on Saturday, beating the TCU Horned Frogs 15-10 in the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin.
After the game, the officiating was a major talking point, with TCU head coach Sonny Dykes calling out the officials. There were some questionable calls, including a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against TCU RB Jeremy Payne in the third quarter, which prompted some strong reactions from the college football world.

Payne received the penalty for signaling first down. However, it’s possible he received the penalty because he did a nose swipe during the celebration.
One influencer called for the officials to let the players play the game.
“15 yards for THIS?! 😭 Football is an emotional game. Unless he threatened or targeted somebody, let the players celebrate. No taunting, no contact, no penalty. Am I wrong?” they wrote on X.

Coach Dan Casey slammed the officials for the call against Payne.
“It’s unbelievably lame to call Unsportsmanlike Conduct for this,” Casey wrote. However, he later noted that while he still thinks “it’s lame,” he acknowledged that “coaches will use this clip to educate their team” while screenshotting the rule about the “nose wipe gesture” not being allowed.

“The worst call of the season so far,” one influencer added. “Unsportsmanlike conduct for signaling first down?”

Podcaster Duke Coughlin couldn’t believe the penalty.

One fan unexpectedly sided with the officials, arguing that these celebrations get old.
“I’m glad he got the penalty. How annoying is it every time a dude gets to the yard marker he gets up and does a first down motion? It’s annoying, immature, and dopey all at once,” they wrote.
During his postgame press conference, Dykes was asked what TCU could’ve done to not have so many penalties and he responded, “Not have ACC officials.” The Horned Frogs totaled 11 penalties and 100 yards to UNC’s three penalties and 20 yards.
Belichick’s Tar Heels avenged last season’s 48-14 loss to the Horned Frogs and dispelled some of the preseason doom and gloom surrounding the team. Belichick’s UNC has dominated the news cycle after finishing last season 4-8.

The program’s general manager, Michael Lombardi, was placed on paid administrative leave in late July 2026 amid a university investigation into what UNC has described only as a personnel matter. Lombardi, through his attorney, has said he is cooperating fully and has not been informed of the specifics. Meanwhile, the former New England Patriots coach called his team’s defensive plays in Ireland after his son, Steve Belichick, was placed on medical leave.
The win against the Horned Frogs in Ireland will certainly lift some of the tension in Chapel Hill and ease the pressure on Belichick.
