‘Guys Don’t Tend To Come Back From These’ — CFB Insider Weighs In on Michael Lombardi’s UNC Future Amid Ongoing Investigation

CFB insider weighs in on Michael Lombardi’s uncertain UNC future as his administrative leave extends amid an ongoing investigation.

North Carolina’s season opener arrived with an important question still hanging over the program. General Manager Michael Lombardi remains away from his duties as the university continues its investigation, leaving uncertainty around one of the Tar Heels’ most important front-office positions.

The case has now gone beyond the period UNC initially expected, making the outlook much less certain. College football insider Pete Thamel has offered his view on what could come next.

Pete Thamel Gives His Take on Michael Lombardi’s UNC Future

Lombardi has been on paid administrative leave since July 27 while UNC investigates a complaint involving a former front-office employee. The university has brought in outside counsel, while the College Sports Commission has reportedly contacted UNC regarding potential revenue-sharing and NIL violations.

Thamel discussed Lombardi’s situation on ESPN’s “College Football Countdown” and said the investigation remains unresolved.

Thamel said, “Let’s start with Mike Lombardi. He’s UNC’s GM, highest-paid general manager in all of college football. He was put on leave more than a month ago. Spoke to his lawyer, Tom Mars, this morning. He said, ‘Look, the investigation is ongoing.’”

According to Thamel, the process has now lasted longer than UNC originally anticipated. He added, “They’ve extended it past the month it was expected. It’s indefinite. Guys don’t tend to come back from these types of administrative leaves. That’s been the case since this started.”

This makes Lombardi’s future difficult to predict, although UNC has not announced any plans to fire him. His attorney, Tom Mars, has said Lombardi is cooperating and wants to clear his name.

Thamel also pointed to the fact that Lombardi has not been dismissed for cause, which could indicate that the university has not reached that point in its investigation.

“Mars did point out if they had reason to fire him for cause, they would have done it already. So expect that to just kind of stay in a spin cycle, if you will,” Thamel said.

Lombardi’s situation carries significant financial and organizational weight. He earns $1.5 million per year under a contract that runs through January 2028. While he remains away, Bill Belichick has said UNC has adjusted responsibilities within the program to cover his absence.

The timing makes the situation even more important for the Tar Heels. UNC is coming off a 4-8 season and has faced criticism over its roster management, while the program entered 2026 hoping for a different result.

Thamel also addressed another coaching issue surrounding the season opener against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. Steve Belichick, UNC’s defensive coordinator, did not travel with the team because of an unrelated medical leave.

“As for Steve Belichick, he obviously did not make the trip for UNC today,” Thamel added. “Look for Bill Belichick to be the play caller, I’ve been told, for UNC going up against Gordon Sammis today. So it’ll be interesting on the sideline to see Bill Belichick at the helm.”

UNC has already started the season opener and is leading the game in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Lombardi remains in an indefinite holding pattern. The investigation has not produced a final decision, but Thamel’s assessment suggests a return to his UNC role is becoming increasingly difficult to envision.
