Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has emerged as one of South Florida’s most polarizing sports figures in the last few years.
Tagovailoa, though, led the Falcons to a 17-12 win over the Miami Dolphins this Friday night in a game that featured his return to Hard Rock Stadium, creating an interesting atmosphere.
While there was plenty of criticism thrown his way, Tagovailoa’s mother, Diane, made it a point to stand firm despite fans taking aim at her son.

Tagovailoa’s return to Hard Rock Stadium turned into an emotional homecoming Friday night, though the Dolphins crowd did not exactly give their former quarterback a warm welcome.
Tagovailoa was met with boos from the relatively small crowd, which became more vocal on his next possession after he fumbled when he failed to handle a snap from Corey Levin.
The moment may have reminded Dolphins fans of Tagovailoa’s infamous “potato chips” comments. While with Miami, he referenced fans sitting on their couches eating potato chips when explaining a botched snap that led to a safety in a 2024 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
However, Tagovailoa made an effort to keep things positive with his former team. After the game, he spent at least five minutes on the field exchanging hugs and handshakes with former Dolphins teammates and members of the coaching and support staff.

Watching her son interact with his former team, Tagovailoa’s mother, Diane, criticized his detractors.
“They’ll critique what they see from the stands and speak on what they’ll never know personally. Meanwhile, character keeps showing itself. Bigger than football. Always,” Diane wrote.
One fan attempted to push back against that message by writing, “200M makes it about football,” but Diane responded with a brief two-word reply.

The response seemed to carry a defensive edge rather than simply celebrating Tagovailoa’s contract.
Tagovailoa’s stint with the Dolphins fell apart as Miami never reached the championship level many expected after they selected him with a top-five pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

They also rewarded him with a four-year, franchise-record $212.4 million extension in 2024, but the relationship eventually deteriorated, and Miami moved on from Tagovailoa this offseason.
Tagovailoa said the boos at Hard Rock Stadium did not change how he feels about Miami or the six years he spent with the franchise.
“Those are probably some of the best six years of my life, being able to play for Miami, being able to play in front of the crowd,” Tagovailoa said following the game. “So, regardless of the reaction, I love the city. We have a home out here.
“We still have our house and whatnot, but I mean, it is what it is. I can’t change any of what they did and whatnot. But it was really cool to see a lot of the guys after the game and then talk to some of the guys during the game. It was a cool homecoming, if you will.”
Tagovailoa ended last season with a 72.1 PFN QB Impact grade with the Dolphins, which ranked 28th in the league. He is now competing with Michael Penix Jr. for Atlanta’s starting quarterback job, with the Falcons set to open the regular season against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
