What Happened to Breece Hall? Latest on Jets Star’s Injury, How Long He’ll Be Out, and Whether He’ll Play Week 1

The New York Jets were expecting an extended timeline under new head coach Aaron Glenn. As a result, despite a disastrous 2025 campaign, they are willing to be patient in finding their long-term pieces.

Moreover, they’ve also traded a bunch of key players over the last year. But the one exception to that rule has been running back Breece Hall. Brought back with an extension this summer, he is, unfortunately, dealing with an injury that has put his status to begin the season into question.

What Happened to Breece Hall?

After being drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Hall has largely been clear of the injury bug. Apart from an ACL tear in his rookie season, Hall has been a model of consistency, playing in 16 or more games in each of the last three seasons.

That is what made the diagnosis even more alarming. After a reception at practice, Hall suffered a non-contact groin strain. At the time, Glenn made it clear that it wasn’t anything too serious.

But a full diagnosis after imaging revealed that he would need 2-3 weeks of recovery time.

When Will Breece Hall Return?

Despite a demoralizing 2025, Hall was a huge bright spot for the Jets, as he recorded the first 1,000-rushing-yard season of his career, finishing with 1,065 yards and four touchdowns, alongside 350 yards through the air.

This year, with Frank Reich as the offensive coordinator, the expectation was that he could continue his upward trajectory. The Jets clearly believed in him too, as they extended him with a three-year deal worth $45.75 million.

But the groin injury has derailed his timeline. After going down on August 17, he was given an initial recovery period of 2-3 weeks. That would put his status in jeopardy for the start of the season unless he pushed through.

Thankfully, coach Glenn has confirmed that he’s firmly on track to be ready by then and should be suiting up to take on the Tennessee Titans to open up the season.

After ranking at number 21 in PFN’s Running Back Impact Metrics, the hope has to be that he can take another step forward. With Geno Smith as his quarterback, the uptick in receiving yards should be inevitable.

With defenses fearing the passing game more than they did last season, it should also open up more opportunities for Hall to be a factor on the ground.

The game against the Titans begins on Sunday, September 13, at 1 p.m. ET.
