The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a key financial move involving wide receiver DK Metcalf as they prepare for the 2026 season. The decision could also help create room for another major priority, with contract talks surrounding star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. continuing to draw attention over the past few weeks.

ESPN Fantasy Football and NFL Draft analyst Field Yates reported the move on his official account.
“The Steelers have restructured the contract of WR DK Metcalf, converting base salary into a signing bonus and creating nearly $18M in 2026 salary cap space,” Yates wrote on X.
Soon after, the Steelers fans made the connection as clearly as possible.

For Steelers Nation, the timing of the move made the speculation hard to ignore.
Porter Jr. is heading into the final year of his rookie contract. The cornerback reportedly wants an extension before returning to the field, and his ambitions go well beyond simply securing his future.
Porter Jr. is seeking a massive, market-resetting deal that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. That kind of contract would require serious financial planning from Pittsburgh.

According to PFN’s CB Impact Metric, Porter Jr. posted an impact score of 88.0 last season, ranking as the third-best cornerback in the league.
Naturally, more fans urged the Steelers to get the deal done after seeing the additional cap space.

Metcalf’s contract restructuring does not confirm an extension is coming, but it certainly gives Pittsburgh more flexibility.
Meanwhile, head coach Mike McCarthy has confirmed that negotiations between the Steelers and Porter Jr. remain at a standstill. Porter has also been sidelined on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with a back injury. However, both sides face a firm deadline, as Pittsburgh does not negotiate new contracts once the regular season begins.

Because of that, the nearly $18 million in newly available cap space could change the conversation. The Steelers previously had only about $1.12 million in room, which severely limited their options. Now, the front office can build a market-setting extension without the same financial pressure.
