Updated David Montgomery Fantasy Outlook 2026: Why the Texans RB Is Undervalued

David Montgomery gets another shot at a clear lead back role this season. Does he have enough left in the tank for both the Texans and fantasy managers?

David Montgomery cleared 200 carries in all four of his seasons with the Bears before transitioning into a complementary, touchdown-heavy role behind Jahmyr Gibbs in Detroit. Throughout his career, he has consistently proven to be a formidable goal-line force, running for seven or more touchdowns in five of the past six seasons, a skill that we need to stick in order for him to return value on his current ADP.

Should I Draft David Montgomery in Fantasy Football?

He provides a surprisingly sturdy floor in PPR formats, having caught 60 of 67 targets over the past two seasons, something that should stick given the injuries Houston has suffered at the WR position this summer.

Montgomery steps into a favorable situation that offers immediate starting volume. However, entering his age-29 season, the central question facing fantasy managers is whether his body can hold a true bellcow role for an entire 17-game schedule. While he managed to play every game in a backup capacity last season, he notably logged three DNPs in both 2023 and 2024 when asked to handle heavier volume, something that suggests we should pencil in some missed time this year.

I am certainly not worried about Woody Marks beating him out on pure talent on the field. That said, Marks does carry fourth-round draft capital from last year, and that investment could result in Marks getting extended work should Montgomery get dinged up or show struggles handling the required workload as the season wears on.

Ultimately, Montgomery is a dependable option who should be trusted with the valuable touches in Houston, but managers should draft him with the understanding that his workload may need to be managed at points.

This isn’t a flashy pick or one that your leaguemates will remember and that’s OK. Stable picks are a part of every winning roster and glue pieces like Montgomery are just as important as the splash options who land on Sportscenter.
