‘It Makes No Sense to Me’ — Ohio State Legend Urban Meyer Baffled by LSU’s Dae’Quan Wright Controversy

Ex-Ohio State coach Urban Meyer addressed the LSU Tigers' controversial decision to sign former Cleveland Browns tight end Dae'Quan Wright.

Former Ole Miss Rebels tight end Dae’Quan Wright shocked both college football and the NFL when he entered the transfer portal last week and reached an agreement to play at LSU.

The Cleveland Browns recently waived Wright before he returned to college football.

Urban Meyer Addresses Dae’Quan Wright Controversy

Wright took advantage of a loophole created when a Louisiana judge granted 16 student-athletes a temporary restraining order permitting them to return to college football.

During this week’s segment of the “Triple Option” podcast, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer revealed how President Donald Trump’s roundtable to tackle the issues affecting college sports was bogged down in the Senate.

Meyer further blasted Wright’s move and explained how the bill on the Senate floor will stop players from suing the NCAA.

“They thought that they had enough the 60 votes in the Senate to push it along,” Meyer said. “They did not, so it’s tabled until September. But we all know the midterm elections are coming, and the focus goes away from passing bills to getting reelected. So I can’t sound the most positive guy about what’s going to happen here in September.

“The key term, which is something I couldn’t even spell six months ago, antitrust exemption. Antitrust exemption will stop the frivolous lawsuits from state statutes and state judges overruling rules set by the NCAA. So it’s a mess. And to say though that we really understand what this Dae’Quan Wright and some of these other guys are suing for, it makes no sense to me.”

Wright’s college football career started at Virginia Tech in 2022 before he transferred to Ole Miss after two seasons. He played under coach Lane Kiffin in Oxford for two seasons and was a key cog in the Rebels’ team that managed an 11-1 regular-season record last year.

In his last season in college football, Wright earned a PFN College Tight End Impact score of 80.6 (No. 20 in the country). The tight end tallied 635 receiving yards and 5 scores on 39 receptions.

Wright’s eligibility ran out last season, but the tight end filed a lawsuit because he was excluded from a new NCAA rule granting student-athletes five seasons of eligibility over five years.

The NCAA’s efforts to curb the eligibility crisis have been severely hampered by student-athletes suing them in various state courts.

A Colorado judge added to the confusion by ruling that the class of 2022 student-athletes were eligible for a fifth season in 2026–2027.

The Tenth Circuit stayed the ruling, but the 16 players granted a TRO by the Louisiana judge are exempt from the stay.
