Sophie Cunningham Fan Reveals Liberty Refused to Display Positive Message Supporting XX-XY Amid Trans-Athlete Drama

A Sophie Cunningham fan shares a surprising claim about a message linked to XX-XY Athletics at a New York Liberty game.

The New York Liberty are currently having a record of 22-15 in the and have put together a strong season till now. However, while the team continues to compete on the court, a decision by its sales team is now making rounds online after a Sophie Cunningham fan shared her experience.

Sophie Cunningham Fan’s Recent Revelation

In a video shared by Outkick on X, a Cunningham fan explained that she had paid to have a message displayed on the scoreboard during the New York Liberty game on Saturday, only to have the team step in and change what she had submitted.

“I wanted to put up a message to Jennifer Sey and thank her for everything that she’s doing. And it got approved. I paid for it. That was five days ago. And then 24 hours before the game, I get an email that said they’re going to alter my message and gave me no reason or recourse,” the fan said during the interview.

Her original message thanked Jennifer Sey and said XX-XY Athletics would “save the day.” The message the Liberty sent back reworded it to simply thank Sey for what she does for the company, dropping the line about saving anything.

“Yeah, so my original message was, ‘Thank you, Jennifer Sey. XX-XY Athletics will save the day.’ Then their response was, or their altercation of this was, ‘Thank you, Jennifer Sey. Thank you for all you do for XXXY Athletics.’ Yeah, they said it was not in the spirit and it wasn’t positive. I don’t understand it. I’m celebrating someone who’s doing amazing things for women,” the fan added.

The fan said she was never told exactly what part of her message crossed a line, and pointed out that the team’s own form doesn’t list any extra rules beyond the standard submission window.

She said she couldn’t figure out what was so objectionable about a message that didn’t even mention Cunningham by name or reference the “Save Women’s Sports” movement directly.

“They said, our scoreboard messages are limited to positive celebratory content and submissions that may intentionally or unintentionally violate that spirit are not eligible for display. Thanks, New York Liberty sales team… I don’t know what that means. What did I do wrong? I want to code. I want a violation. I read everything. I read their website. I made sure to follow the rules.”

“I said nothing derogatory. I didn’t even say, save women’s sports. I just said, shout out to the CEO of a dope company who’s changing the world from my perspective. That’s obviously not their perspective, but is this America? Can we have different perspectives?” the fan added.

This isn’t the only run-in fans supporting XX-XY Athletics have had recently. Something similar played out at State Farm Arena on August 16, when two Indiana Fever fans went to a game wearing XX-XY Athletics shirts to show support for Cunningham.

The mother and daughter reportedly spent close to $1,000 each on their tickets and had come specifically to cheer on the Fever guard and back her position on women’s sports. Nothing happened for most of the game. Then, during overtime, a security guard walked up and asked them to step away from their seats to talk.

According to what was reported, the guard said another fan nearby had complained that the shirts were offensive. The two were then given an option. Either to put on Atlanta Dream “Wellness & Health Night” shirts handed out by the arena, or leave.

Not wanting to miss the rest of the game after paying so much to be there, they agreed to change shirts and stayed for the finish.

Sey, the founder of XX-XY Athletics, has organized and attended many gatherings during Fever games in support of Cunningham. Her involvement has made the organization a visible part of the fan movement surrounding the player.

With the latest claim involving the Liberty’s sales team now circulating online, fans are once again debating how WNBA teams handle messages.
