‘Can’t Believe That Happened’ — Mother of Sophie Cunningham Fan Targets WNBA For Curtailing Freedom of Expression in Anti-Trans Athlete Debate

Sophie Cunningham’s trans-athlete debate takes another turn as a fan’s mother accuses the WNBA of limiting freedom of expression.

The transgender athlete debate surrounding the WNBA and Sophie Cunningham continues to follow the Indiana Fever, with the latest controversy involving two fans who say they were prevented from openly displaying their support for the guard.

On Sunday, a mother and daughter attended the Fever’s matchup against the Atlanta Dream after reportedly paying $1,000 each for tickets. Both came to support Cunningham and her stance on trans athletes competing against women.

According to their account, however, they were later asked to cover the messages on their clothing.

Cunningham’s stance has remained one of the most divisive issues surrounding the WNBA. Since she first discussed the topic publicly, supporters and critics have repeatedly made their presence felt at Indiana games, turning some arenas into unexpected flashpoints in the wider debate.

The latest incident reportedly occurred during Sunday’s Dream-Fever showdown. The mother wore an “XX/XY” shirt, while her daughter had “For the Girls” printed across the back of hers.

According to content creator Adam Francisco, the two fans were allegedly given a choice: “cover the shirts or leave.”

Francisco also wrote that a woman wearing a “Protect Trans Rights” shirt was prominently featured on the arena’s Jumbotron before she was also reportedly asked to cover the message.

The mother later described her experience, insisting that she had done nothing disruptive.

“We did nothing. We were just sitting there. I didn’t make signs; I wanted to make signs, but I didn’t. I did nothing. … I can’t believe that just happened.”

The incident has drawn attention because the dispute appears to center not on conduct inside the arena, but on what fans were permitted to wear while attending a game.

It also comes just weeks after another WNBA-related controversy involving fans supporting Cunningham.

Late last month, several fans at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle were reportedly asked to put down signs supporting the Fever guard during Indiana’s matchup with the Seattle Storm.

Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton later confronted two young fans, with one reportedly reduced to tears during the exchange. The franchise’s majority owner, Ginny Gilder, subsequently issued a public apology, while the WNBA suspended Keaton from five home games.

The two incidents have now added another layer to an already heated debate.

While arenas have rules governing signs, clothing, and fan behavior, the league and its teams also face growing scrutiny over how those rules are applied when the messages involve a politically and culturally sensitive issue.

For Cunningham’s supporters, the question is becoming bigger than the transgender-athlete debate itself. If fans can be removed or told to hide a message simply because it is controversial, the league risks turning a policy dispute into a free-expression controversy, and that may prove just as difficult to contain.
