What Happened to Zach Charbonnet? A Look at the Seahawks RB’s Injury Status and When He’ll Return in 2026

Zach Charbonnet’s ACL recovery continues as the Seahawks await clarity on when their key running back can return in 2026.

Last season ended abruptly for Zach Charbonnet after he tore the ACL in his left knee during the Divisional Round. The Seattle Seahawks running back later underwent surgery on Feb. 20 to repair the injury. Then, when training camp opened, Charbonnet began on the active/physically unable-to-perform list as he continued working his way back.

Now, with the 2026 NFL season less than a month away, fans are understandably waiting for an update on when Charbonnet can return.

Zach Charbonnet’s Injury Status Ahead of the 2026 Season

ACL injuries rarely follow a simple schedule, and recovery after reconstruction takes 9 to 12 months before an athlete can safely resume full-contact football.

Now, the timing of Charbonnet’s return will depend on how his knee responds throughout each stage of rehabilitation. His rehab centers on controlling swelling and restoring his knee’s range of motion. From there, the focus gradually shifts toward rebuilding his strength and stability.

And the running back must progress through each phase without rushing the process. That approach becomes especially important for a position that demands frequent cuts, bursts, and contact.

So, even when the knee feels better, the Seahawks still need to make sure his body can handle the demands of an NFL game.

Realistically, a return before the midpoint of the 2026 NFL season would qualify as an aggressive target, even if Charbonnet avoids any setbacks.

Earlier this month, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided a measured update on the running back’s rehabilitation.

“It’s just a progression that you’ve got to be able to do to get your body ready to play, especially at the running back position,” Macdonald said. “He’s going through it, hitting his hurdles, and we’re rolling. We’ll see what the timetable is and how quickly he comes back.”

A healthy Charbonnet would give the Seahawks their most complete option in the backfield.

Once he returns, Charbonnet can handle the lead role if rookie Jadarian Price struggles, take over near the goal line, and remain the likely choice on passing downs. That versatility would give Seattle’s offense a clear boost.

And he had already shown his value during the 2025 regular season before the injury ended his year.

The 25-year-old running back carried the ball 184 times for 730 yards and a team-high 12 touchdowns. He also contributed 144 receiving yards, giving the Seahawks another way to use him.

According to PFN’s RB Impact Metric, Charbonnet posted an impact score of 75.9 last season, ranking 18th at his position.

For now, Seattle must move forward without him. The Seahawks selected Price 32nd overall out of Notre Dame and will lean on him while Charbonnet rehabs. Emanuel Wilson and George Holani also remain in the running back room, giving Price support until the veteran returns.

But Seattle will want Charbonnet back as soon as his recovery allows.
