Caitlin Clark picked up her eighth technical foul of the season, a number that carries an automatic one-game suspension. It came during the Indiana Fever’s 90-86 road win over the Chicago Sky at the United Center on Saturday.
Fever coach Stephanie White was furious with the decision and did not hold back when explaining why she thought the call was wrong during the postgame press conference.

The controversial call came in the third quarter with the Fever holding a 10-point lead over the Sky.
Clark was driving through the paint when she passed the ball and lost her balance while heading out of bounds. As she stumbled, she made contact with a referee.

The official immediately assessed Clark a technical foul, arguing that she had “intentionally” sought out the referee and hit her with a forearm. That explanation left both Clark and White confused.
Clark asked, “For what?” on the spot, while White reportedly picked up a technical of her own moments later for arguing the call. That also meant White will face a one-game suspension.
When asked about the call after the game, the Fever coach did not mince words, arguing that the call against Clark was completely wrong.
“My tech was for saying that’s [expletive]. Even though I heard the F-bomb the whole [expletive] game. My tech was for saying that’s [expletive]. Like, that’s a bad call. That’s a bad call. Incidental contact when you’re flying out of control.”

“I thought her teammates should have come up and talked to her about that as well. I think that’s really bad. That [expletive] happens all the time in the game. You know, officials have to have some awareness in those moments and it didn’t happen.”
When asked whether the team planned to appeal the call, both White and Clark confirmed they would.
“Yes,” White said.
“Yes. It’s already a big one,” Clark added.
They didn’t have to wait long. The Fever filed their appeal immediately after the game, and less than two hours later, the WNBA rescinded the technical, wiping out both the suspension and the $1,500 fine that comes with an eighth technical.
Had it stood, Clark would have been forced to sit out the Fever’s home game against the New York Liberty on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Despite the controversy, Clark finished with a strong 26-4-11 stat line, helping the Fever snap a two-game skid that included tough losses to the Minnesota Lynx and the Las Vegas Aces.
She also picked up her eighth career game with at least 25 points, 10 assists, and 5 made 3-pointers on the night. It’s a feat the rest of the WNBA has combined for only four times in league history.
The win moved Indiana to 20-12, edging past the Atlanta Dream by half a game for fourth place.
